want to get into theory and actually composing

ok i know the very basics of theory . that is about it . I'd really like to learn more and use it in my playing to help get better organization. I have a fair bit of phsical ablity to play solos but i dont know how the scales and cord progessions tie into using the right scales and then having all the different scale positions for the same key.

So i'd like to get myself stright on theory and it works . Where is a good place to start. Books, dvds, lessons any advice would be great .

I'd recommend finding a really good guitar teacher. I've been playing off/on for about 16 years or so. I was never really into learning theory. I learned the basics but wanted to learn, and understand more. I got hooked up with a GIT grad. I've been seeing him for about 4 months now and have learned alot in that time. He is teaching me things that i'd never get into learning myself. I find it hard to work on things on my own. With a teacher, i have a lesson to learn between each time i have to see him. If i don't take time to learn each lesson, i am just wasting my money, my time, and his time. So, i learn the lessons. Just my 2 cents.

i also studied with a GIT grad up until recently and i knew NOTHING before i started 2 years ago and now im headed to GIT myself this april. don't waste years in books/net like i did. no offense to this site, but its hard to get a complete answer to all your questions here from other users (plus a lot of people here are still learning and still try to answer these questions; not a big help!). no replacement for a good teacher

I agree that if your goal is to really learn theory then a good teacher is the best way to go. Having a teacher helps you to focus a lot more than learning on your own because you get a new lesson to work on every week and if you don't work on it then you're just wasting your money so you DO work it and learn something new. Just make sure that you look around and find a GOOD teacher because I tried the guitar teacher thing for about a month and it didn't really do a whole lot for me because the teacher didn't play the styles that I wanted to learn.

Consider other sources of music instruction, too. I got very little theory from the guitar teachers I've had, but a lot of theory outside of guitar (3 yrs in high school and 4 yrs of liberal arts music college).

funny thing happened today . I went to my local music store and the guy that teaches lessons was playing . I got me a guitar and set down at an amp and started playing . I noticed that he had stopped playing and was watchin me play . Anyways we got to talking about guitar and me taking theory lessons and he said that i should look into going to GIT . He said he could catch me up to theory but i had the talent to go.

So that was pretty cool , i will probably take some music classes in college even though i dont think i'd ever get or want a degree in music. The GIT thing sounds cool though, i may look into it.

Definitely look into some regimented classes. Once you have the basics through 4 part harmony down you can pretty much take it from there with books or study aids. You will need some human interface to get you to that point.

http://aim-music.com is kinda like the east cost equivalent of GIT if your interested. At one point it was actually gonna be a GIT branch (When I attended the amps and stands were all stamped GIT) but that never materialized and it just became a seperate school. Nite, Bill, and Randy are still there and all of them are insanely good teachers.

yes i found yours site and it is absoulty great . I love the progression builder you have . I have been playing with that a lot .

I found some really good info on chord progressions and stuff from another forum i joined . here are the links that i was given . They are extermly informative and helped me out quite a bit with understanding more about how things tie in .
