Question

warmup thread!

Just out of curiosity, how do all of you get your fingers warmed up (If you do at all =P) before you play?

I usually just move some nine chords around the neck and run up and down the chromatic scale, but lately Im getting hungry for some more Ideas

Let's hear 'em! =D

Re: warmup thread!

a 5-minute workout with a stressball and a 5-minute stretching a rubberband wrapped on all fingers... and then once that's a little "warmed-up", a 12th fret chromatic progressively going to the 1st fret

Re: warmup thread!

I dip my hands in WD-40, so to prevent from melting strings/frets
Ha just kidding, I usually pick any random sweep (usually 5 strings, but I'll get better at 6) and descend and ascend over and over until it starts to clean up. Generally I have really stiff hands in the morning and sweeping is out of the question right off the bat. For some reason my hands forget how to sweep the first few minutes of everyday . Other than that I do this chromatic scale thing, and an ugly sounding (like a staircase shape) sweep starting on the 12th fret d string. I learned the last two in some petrucci instructional, I'm sure someone knows what I'm talking about.

Re: warmup thread!

I've actually never tried sweeping - any easy licks to practice for a beginner to sweeping?

Re: warmup thread!

I do an octaves excercise my old guitar teacher showed me a few years ago. You play low E, open, 2nd fret D string, 1st fret, E string, 3rd fret D string, 2nd fret, E string, 4th fret, D string, 3rd fret, E string, open G string, 4th fret, E string, 1st fret, G string... and so on until you reach 4th fret, high E string then back down again, keeping it one finger per fret.

Hard to explain so I made a tab:

Looks easy but try doing it fast

Honestly though... most of the time I just noodle around.

Re: warmup thread!

well, I just do a related modal relay, speeding up as I go up and down.
then I normally play some Paul gilbert, after that your fingers are pretty warm

Re: warmup thread!

You could always do the 10 hour workout, but that may be a bit over the top. Still, it's worth getting hold of ot and selecting bits at random for quick warm-ups. Small stretches until fairly warm and larger stretches to finish up.

Re: warmup thread!

I follow Petrucci's warmup from rock discipline. It's got a bit of everything, wide stretches, alternate picking, string skipping etc.

Re: warmup thread!

Mostly I just start playing scale runs with finger streching on the low frets. Sometimes I warm up my fingers on my wife's hiney
