Those are Roman numerals, for the position.

The stand for chords in a given key.

V is the fifth chord

VI is the sixth

if its big letters it means major if its small letters its minor

e.g.

in key of E major.

I is the chord of E major,
ii is the chord of F# minor
etc

This should help

Scale of C Major, there are 7 notes :
C
D
E
F
G
A
B

Each is given a roman numeral depending on its place in the scale so
C- I (one)
D- II (two)
E- III (three)
F- IV (four)
G- V (five)
A- VI (six)
B- VII (seven)

So the chords are given their roman numeral based on this. E.g. a G Major chord is called chord V.
