What is "chicken pickin' ?"

There's a thread elsewhere in the forum about Vince Gill's playing abilities and it reminded me of a question I had.

What are people talking about when they say a guitar or amp is good for "chicken pickin?"

I can only assume it refers to twangy, clean, country soloing (like what Vince is doing in the videos in that thread). But am I right? Anybody got a classic example?

I use chicken pickin' occasionally, but a lot for a metal player. I find it's easier than alternate picking for certain riffs and licks, particularly ones with a lot of string skipping.

Being from the Nashville area, it'd be a sin if you didn't.

It's using a pick and your fingers at the same time, check out Farm Fiddlin' from Zakk Wylde. Albert Lee is a monster Chickin Picker.

Re: What is "chicken pickin' ?"

There's a difference between hybrid picking and chicken picking. Both are with pick and fingers, but with chicken picking you pluck the string from underneath to get a snappy sound. Like a chicken...
