Re: what are the must learn guitar insturmentals?

A Go Go, Green Tea - John Scofield
Bright size life - Pat Metheny
John Abercrombie's solo on Afro Blue, on Dr Lonnie Smith's 1990something Afro Blue album
some Joe Pass solos

yea, they're jazz stuff... but they force you to know your instrument so well

Re: what are the must learn guitar insturmentals?

Wow, I never really learned all this stuff. Damn, who in the hell can play all this up to par... But here are some good ones:

Vai - Tender Surrender
YJM - Far Beyond the Sun; Krakatu
Greg Howe - Jump Start (best solo lick of all time)
Dream Theater - Erotomania
Satriani - Love Thing, Crushing Day
Becker - Temple of the Absurd

Actually being able to play all this stuff is one thing though, haha!

Oh, and as much as I am on the fence overall about Gilbert, I must say that "Scarified" is a shred standard.

Yeah Pete does a great job teaching that. Many people miss the sutilties of that piece.
I agree Eruption should be high on any guitarists list (I don't just mean the tapping part that everyone knows).
