What should I be studying?

I've only been playing since the first of the year. I've already bought, partly based on recommendations from members of this, and other, forums, an American made Strat, Gibson Les Paul, Fender Blues Jr, Ibanez Tube Screamer pedal, and a Gibson Dobro guitar.

I can play, thus far, Hey Jude, Let It Be, Pretty Woman, Proud Mary (including the lead), Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay, Light My Fire, (the intro to) Hotel California, the intro to Johnny B Goode and A Hard Day's Night.

I also know a minor pentatonic scale, C scale, G scale, and a blues scale.

I had a teacher but quit him after about 10 lessons. He had no plan. Just had me learn some licks. He really didn't know how to teach. But he sure can play.

Anyway, what should I be learning? I just ordered five materials on slide guitar (also recommended by members of this, and other forums).

What are the basics? More scales?

My immediate goal is to use a looping pedal and play Stevie Ray Vaughn kind of blues.

thanx.

also dont just concentrate on scales, learn some chord construction and jazz theory. believe it or not, theory can be really interesting (and maybe even fun) :P

Re: What should I be studying?

My advice for the man who may stick with the mighty five-tone scale (pentatonic).
Learn every position for your minor pentatonic scales as well as every other scale you learn, the absolute worst feeling you can get playing guitar is reaching what you think is a limitation.

The worst limitation is being stuck in the whole box shape.

But most of all, practice!!!

I felt guilty about buying an RG20TH after playing for nine months, until I read this.

I'd like to add:
Make sure you are having fun.
Even though a set training schedule is the best idea, don't forget to just sit down and noodle once in a while. Practice scales is the only way to learn them, but let's face it, It can be boring. You have to cut loose once in a while (but not too often).

Re: What should I be studying?

Buy the jazz theory book, even if you don't like jazz. With the knowledge you get from that book you can analyze the songs you learn instead of just learning how to play it.

Is there a particular title you recommend? Or just any jazz theory book?
