When to use chormatic runs? - In a prog metal context

How do you people typically work chromatics into yer solos? *Or what sorts of things do you find it tasteful to chromaticize over? *The more proggy, the better.

I can burn chromatics but they sound like $hit over all of my arrangements.

There are lessons by JP where he explains how you can use chromatic passages in a melody, he uses Chopin's etudes as an example and talks about the way you can incorporate that into a song.
