Re: Which chords ?
Try this (three notes per string)
G, A, A#, C#, D, E, G, A, A#......
and play all its combinations

go from a :g major: to an :a major: and keep the note in the bass :g: on both chords. You will then be in the key of g lydian. Use several different forms of a :g major 7#11 arpeggio: with the :g lydian mode: and you are good to go. Be careful not to make it sound like the theme from the Simpsons.
The other way to create great chordal harmony against a mode is to not use chords based on triads. Instead of harmony based on diatonic root, III, IV's......try diatonic root, up a diatonic II, and then up a diatonic V.

This is the G-major scale on the fretboard, first 12 frets. You can then take this notes and create chords from them, regardless what they are called, as long as they sound good to you, you're fine, and they are bound to go with G-major, since they're in the G-major scale. You can see that in the first position, you have your familiar G, Am, Em, Em7, C shapes...Take these notes, and experiment, then if you're feeling adventurous you can try adding some passing chromatic notes, etc...
