Re: 3D model

I go to that forum quite a bit. A few years ago I was really big into Lightwave and modeling in it. One cool thing about modeling is that you really learn to look at objects and see the detail. Otherwise it looks fake. However, the one thing that he missed was the scalloped frets on the neck. Other than that it looks damn good.

Re: 3D model

As someone who spends ALL day modeling AC motors in 3D space and take a great respect for other people's work i will say that is amazing!

Thanks for sharing it.

Speaking of which, how do you guys/gals "get into" something like this? I went and checked out the pricing on 3ds Max and it's thousands of dollars. For something I don't know whether it'll work or not, that's a heck of a lot of money.

For me it started out as doing some cool text effects on my videos. The more I used it the more I got into it. At one point I was doing test renders of rooms trying to recreate a still live sitting by a window. I also did some animations with it. The thing is it's really time consuming. Building the model takes up tons of time. But after you're finished it's CPU time to render out with ray tracing. Just to get a single frame to render it might take my computer a couple of hours. It's also an excellent tool for doing small special effects. I still have it, but I don't have the time to build anything in it. I'd rather spend my spare time playing guitar. I don't know what Lightwave is going for now. I've got version 7.5 which is several years out of date now. It was well over $1000. But it does top quality work. It's what the big boys use in Hollywood.

Re: 3D model

I started getting into 3D work a while back, but havn't done it for a month or so because my g-card has smoked itself - I didn't really make anything amazing, just practiced making different materials - I made snooker table with each colored ball a different material (glass/chrome/wood/brushed steel/marble, etc) but couldn't figure out a way to make a realistic felt surface without using oodles of extrusions. I also did a jug of orange juice with some ice cubes in it, but the ice was a PITA and getting a liquid that doesn't just look like orangey water is an arse, too.

I think you can actually download 3ds max from Autodesk for a 30 day trial... Not *sure* though - 30 days is enough to see if it's something you really want to learn about - I sure as hell do, but I have zilch money to even get an old version of 3ds max.
