Church Music???

Hey everybody. Here's one that I wrote for my church. It's a riff on the old standard hymn Holy, Holy, Holy. My church needed something about a minute long to cover a gap in the service, so I sat down and recorded this in about two hours. This was prior to my new Soundblaster X-Fi soundcard so the quality is a little poor, but it worked. You shoulda seen the raised eyebrows when this cued up.

Re: Church Music???

My church is a little progressive. We'll try anything. Our pastor is great to work with. Someone came up to him once and said they had a complaint about a prior service. His response was, "Okay, what didn't God like about the service?" It's not about peoples' individual likes and dislikes and stereotypical worship services. If something like this helps encourage worship, then we'll do it.

Hey man!

Great stuff!

Nice duel melody...!

I am the arranger/transcriber/guitarist for my church and we, too, are really progressive in the arts....I get to do a lot of different styles and write for a huge variety of instrumentalists....so I understand what that feels like to be able to have that creative freedom in that context.

I can post a few clips if you like, but only if you request it. I don't want to hijack your thread. (I could create a new thread, too).

Anyway, best of everything!

Peace,

Scott

Not at all man. Hijack away. It's always nice to hear what others are doing. Creativity feeds on new experiences.

I'd like to see it, too. Unfortunately, it's all me. The drums were done with Acoustica Beatcraft. The guitars were all me. I had to burn it to CD and play it from there. I have played live in our church (very small...90 members) before, but it was acoustic stuff. Still rockin' but kinder and gentler in an acoustic kind of way.

Cool!

Here are a few clips of my arrangements for my church. All performed live during service.

Some Christmas stuff:

O COME EMMANUEL
Sjones O Come Emmanuel PERFORMED LIVE AT MY CHURCH (my arrangement with a "Matrix" and "Evanescence" feel...this is totally based on the soundtrack of "Revolutions" and an Evanesence song) I'm the arranger/orchestrator/director/guitarist, electric sitar with choir, orchestra (horns, strings), full contemporary rhythm section; - (there is a tapping solo around 5:00)

ANGELS PRELUDE
Angels Prelude PERFORMED LIVE AT MY CHURCH More about the overall arrangement, than shreddy soloing....It's with full band and orchestra. Tipped my hat to musical influences from Evanescence, Alias (T.V. show), and Battlestar Galactica (the new one).

Next......

A few years ago I had the pleasure of arranging this piece, using a 25 piece percussion ensemble, full band and orchestra.

If the title scares you off as corny, reconsider. It was one of the highlights of my career.

Here is the audio and some pics taken from the video, to give you an idea.

It's a big file, but worth the journey, I think.

It goes from an ethereal world music feel, to full on Modern Rock.

Sjones-Drummer Boy feature 2001 LIVE

Beginning with a single percussionist and ending with the works.

YEP, that's me above...playing congas...all the guitar on the last phase was me, but I had tracked it in advance, along with some loops and keys, so that I could play percussion on it.)

Ending with a bang....

There was no full, standard drum kit on this, the kit sound towards the end, is a combination of 4 guys whacking cymbals and snares, with concert bass drum. (with the loop and the rest of the people hitting things)

Some Easter stuff:

Starts out different from where it winds up....be patient. It's a slammin' little piece. I used samples of old recordings on the intro....it was synced to video until the actual song kicks in....

Alive PRELUDE, INTRO, ALIVE Israel Houghton/Scott Jones recorded LIVE 4-16-06

Anyway, if you have time, check these out. I have more, but let's not get ahead of ourselves...

Peace,

Scott

Re: Church Music???

Wow!! Those were incredible! I really enjoyed Drummer Boy. I'm biased, though. I played bass drum in the Clemson University marching band. It's great that you have the resources to accomplish that. We'll get there one day. We're starting a second service at the end of this summer and I'm hoping to attract some musicians from the local college (Coastal Carolina U.) to help me flesh out our praise group. Keep up the good work!

Re: Church Music???

Excellent musical work in this post. Very inspiring and moving. Good to hear that music is opening up and growing more in the church. I hope to get more musically involved in the church. Thanks for sharing guys!
