Devil's Slingshot (MacAlpine, Sheehan, Donati) Video's

There's a lot of focus on T-MAC, but pretty cool nonetheless. This is Tony's band with Billy Sheehan and Virgil Donati (the greatest drummer alive!).

You are joking, right? Even Portnoy himself would tell you he isn't a patch on Virgil Donati.

Portnoy can't do what Virg does, and you obviously aren't familiar with Virgil's drumming because you would never say something like that if you were.

HA! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DrwRFpbP8U

Benny Greb and Thomas Lang! Now _these_ are drummers! So damn groovy it's insane! And their coordination is just unbelievable!! Just posting a funky video of Greb, but you should check out Lang if you don't know him already..

Very simple, straight ahead, not complex or interesting. Have you heard Ataraxia by Planet X? I hope you are not comparing this Greb dude to Virgil.

This is an interesting groove. http://youtube.com/watch?v=W-2Ut3heVKU

Re: Devil's Slingshot (MacAlpine, Sheehan, Donati) Video's

Let's just agree to disagree. I can see Virgil goes over most people's heads, so I'll leave it at that. I do suggest to check out some Planet X albums though, especially the latest (Quantum) and their second album (MoonBabies), plus the 1999 album "Serious Young Insects" by his band OTV (On The Virg). If anyone should doubt what I'm saying after listening to those, then there's really no hope for you! What Virg does is almost physically impossible. All the other drummers out there, Portnoy, Weckl, et all, they know it too.

Oh, I should post a link to the official Planet X MySpace page I run also, there's audio tracks up there. http://www.myspace.com/planetxsite

Re: Devil's Slingshot (MacAlpine, Sheehan, Donati) Video's

I stood in front of Virgil's drumkit at a Planet X show - it was incredible. In terms of sheer technique, very few can touch this guy. That said Dave Weckl can do some absolutely insane stuff as well, so can Terry Bozzio, and Vinnie Colaiuta, and Chad Wackerman, and...

I am kind of partial to jazz drummers though: DeJohnette, Tony Williams, Billy Cobham...

Well.. does it HAVE to be a insanely difficult and impossible groove to be great? One of the greatest drummers play it simple. What matters is the groove and the feel, IMO. If it makes your feet move!!
And I'm surprised you judge him that much just out of that video - at least it seems like it. He's incredible and you should check him out.. Virgil is of course great though just make make that clear!

No, it doesn't have to be complex, but I am sorry, the groove doesn't interest me very much. I could probably play that myself and it's nothing I haven't heard before a million times.

LMAO! What are you smoking? Weckl is a great drummer, but "has more talent in his pinkie"? That's about the funniest thing I've read on Jemsite so far.

Seriously, you need to move on. Buddy Rich was a great drummer back in his day but this is 2007. Do you honestly think Rich could do what Virgil does? You don't get it. You probably never will because I can only assume it goes in one ear and out the other. Technically and musically, Donati is absolutely unparalleled. This is a fact. We're not only talking technique either. Can Buddy Rich or Dave Weckl compose music like Virgil? No. Way. Donati composes about 80-90% of the Planet X music himself for starters. Do yourself a favour and listen to their albums. What drummer can you name that comes anywhere near his level of compositional skill, understanding of layered beats, musicality and technique? How many other drummers can you name who could handle 3 different time signatures at once? Good luck.

Damn, I'm blown away by your ignorance and unwillingness to open your mind and ears. This is kinda like someone trying to convince you that CC DeVille is a better player than Allan Holdsworth or Shawn Lane.
