Eddie Van Halen 5150 solo, Japan 1989

Here's a video (11Mb) of Edward blazing through the 5150 solo. I think the version on the Live without a Net video is still the pinnacle/pineapple, but this is amazing as ever. I do not know where the guitar ends and Edward begins.

It's the fact that it's different to the LwaN version and the album rendition that makes me believe that EVH = God.

Fluid, tasteful, inspired playing. Seemingly effortless technique. The list goes on and on. A true case of "understand the rules before you break them" ...holding a vision, and manifesting it through experimentation will allow your art to flow.

p.s. sorry if you wanted it to go on, but I'm running out of webspace, so I "just" edited the solo. But man, what a solo!

imho of course, heh.

This 72 minute concert was broadcast on Japanese television in 1989 on the OU812 tour. That's pretty much all I can say. The solo on that evening's performance of Summer Nights was similarly cosmic, and I really don't like that song. I'll upload it sometime. It's a freakin' good concert. Sammy doesn't clown around because Japanese audiences don't throw braziers on stage (or maybe it was just edited out!), and his voice was on tremendous form, really rich and warm. Tone is in the throat too apparently.

Interestingly Sam, the Van Halen from 5150 onwards is quite a different band (some say better, others say worse; I say "blow me") to the Van Halen from the "Van Halen 1" to "1984" albums. I suggest you get hold of 1984 and 5150 and then if you still like it all, go for their entire work. I envy you! This band changed my life. I listen to them every day and still my brain melts at their magnificence. If you think his tone is impressive there, trust me...it's nothing compared to his recordings. Steve Vai's tone on Eat 'em and Smile and Eddie's tone on Fair Warning/1984 are the best that rock guitar has ever produced imho.

As I've hinted at, there is a video which you can buy called "Live without a Net" which features the definitive performance of this song. I think I achieved enlightenment the first time I heard that solo. It's just...phenomenal.

I just love the manner in which Ed switches between picking, legato and right hand tapping with such ease. Go see him on tour if you can!

Other than the kind-of-cool whammy tricks, I don't see anything that special about this solo or the tone...

oh well, maybe it's just me

what are the differences between the "two bands"? Anything to do with DLR or just a different direction?

His tone blows me away, I love how it growls when he's lower on the neck and man, he sounds soo ballsy!

Gonna go shopping today!

DLR and Sammy Hagar take the band in two very different directions. DLR is more straight up rock while Hagar takes the band down a more keyboard driven pop/rock avenue. Most people seem to prefer one era to another. I prefer Roth's stuff but I love some of the 'Van Hagar' stuff too.

Yup, what Weserman said.

I've uploaded the Live without a Net solo, with a bit more of an intro. This version of the solo is initially very trippy and psychedelic, and then becomes extremely punchy. The force is strong in this one.

Note Ed's skill in playing very loose but still ending up where he wants to go. He is wonderfully lazy with the beat, because he knows he can outrun it any time he bloody well likes!

Enjoy all.

I checked some clips from v-h.com as well as mp3s and I dont really like DLR's voice in what I heard. A bit too... sexual.

listening to the clip, the tone man the last guy whose tone kicked me that hard was Brett Garsed!
the solo in itself is amazing, I love the beginning, how his guitar seems to get lost in the delay, always with that growl

man, cant thank you enough for posting these clips!

Ha ha, "sexual" says it all really.

Dave would be proud! Seriously though, you must listen to Fair Warning and 1984 all the way through, because they are masterpieces.

I saw that you stuck the link on Petrucci's site, that's cool. Spread the word!

It's easy to forget how good of a guitarist EVH is after listening to guys like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert and Buckethead for so long.
