Ever write a tune and this happens!

Have you ever written a song and realize its been done? I have. I was composing a country "style" noodlin song and now that I listen back to it I've completley ripped off the Allman Brothers. Totally unintentionally! Arrghh! The main body of the song has to be changed but I think I can salvage a couple of licks. Listen for yourself. Good thing I'm in the early stages of writing when I noticed the similarities.

Re: Ever write a tune and this happens!

Wow. I thought you were overstating it. I was expecting to listen to it and say "come on man your being too hard on yourself," but honestly that sounds like "Jessica" played slowly. Not entirely but a lto fo the same licks are there.

I really don't have this experience but then again, I usually can't be bothered to learn anyone else's songs. I'm changing now, as I can see that it will help me grow as a guitarist but, I was a jerky arrogant musician for the first 10 years of my playing.

yea that really is an exact rhythmic copy of jessica. sometimes our subconscious comes out when we write. were we just thinking of a certain tune at that time???

Re: Ever write a tune and this happens!

Way back, at a time when I had ONLY heard a few songs from Scenes From A Memory by Dream Theater (and no other albums of theirs), I was writing a tune and thought I had written a pretty wicked riff.

I sent it over to my bandmate at the time, who informed me that I had just independently come up with the EXACT riff from A Change of Seasons (never heard it before).

It's a weird feeling. On one hand its like awesome! I wrote a riff that John Petrucci wrote and used. On the other hand it's "crap, gotta scrap it now".

Sheet happens

Re: Ever write a tune and this happens!

you couldnt tell from what you have composed that it sounded like jessica? either way

good composers are new and refreshing, and great composers steal. its how they rearrange the stolen parts

A certain tune? Not really, I have been listening to Jerry Reed and Chet atkins lately and wanted to do a country noodlin song harmonized in 3rds. This is how it came out. The main "hook" or body of the song is Jessica but the parts I play over the c chord and d chord are not at all. I've spent some time this morning trying to re write the hook. We'll see how it turns out. Heck I'm not even a fan of the Allman Bros at all, I've heard their songs on the radio but never sat down and tried to learn any of their songs as I dont play covers at all. I'll keep you posted when I come up with something more "me".

Had this happen to me with Death's "Symbolic" and I was like "Well...at least I know it's a good song"

How I wish I could've written "Symbolic"

Re: Ever write a tune and this happens!

Ive never done it but...one day my cousin was over with guitar and showed me a riff he had come up with.
It sounded really familiar, after about a month or so I realised it was the main riff from 'Message in a Bottle' by the Police. He has never heard it before. We had a good laugh

Re: Ever write a tune and this happens!

Hey we all do it from time to time. I know I've done it more than once unfortunately... some tunes are so memorable they stick in your mind somewhere in your subconscious and when you come to write something they sneak out....

even mr Vai did it once by accident

skip to 4:55 ... see if you recognise the tune...
