Re: Full Metal Kit

That's a cool song you've got the there. I particularly liked the the way the song starts off, the guitar solo, and the outro.

Re: Full Metal Kit

I think what sets it apart is the drum tracks. Is that programmed ?

Re: Full Metal Kit

Glad you guys like it. Yeah, I programmed the drums. Would love to have real drums but too much hassle/time/money is required.

The gear I used was:
- RG470
- Yamaha 5 string Bass
- PodXT
- Cakewalk Home Studio
- SBLive

I've since upgraded most of the computer gear.

Re: Full Metal Kit

Hi ibanezcollector just the standard V7, V8 pups in the 470. I think I only used the bridge pickup. I'll look for the preset, I think it needs the Metal Model Pack though. I'll send it when I find it.

Re: Full Metal Kit

This might be a bit of a stupid question but here goes anyway....
Did you have to program ALL the drums and fills indevidualy or are you using pre-made rolls/ fills from a drum sampler CD ?
I only ask as either way I think the drums are as tight as a mouse's arse !

It's not a stupid question, I programmed each drum hit individually for the fills in a midi sequencer (Cakewalk). I usually program a fairly simple beat, then do some copy and paste and then I add the other instruments (bass+guitar+stnth). When I've got the overall feel of the song I listen back to it paying attention to the drums and I imagine I'm some kind of hot drummer like Mike Portnoy or Virgil Donati, depending on the style. Then I try to program what I think they would play.

Real drummers, good ones at least, get their ideas and inspiration from what the rest of the band is playing (like real musos joke). So, I've found the drums sound more natural if I finish them off last paying attention to how the rhythms in the drums mix with the rhythms in the other instruments. This song has some over the top rhythms so it's a good example of locking the drums with the other instruments but in other styles the drums would be a bit looser.

People seem to like my drum programming. I might write a tutorial if people are interested.
