It sounds like he might just have his guitar's volume set to less than full, something like 75%. You can see at the end, it doesn't take much to turn it off completely.

On an unrelated note, I've never realised how often he switches pickups! Its like every three seconds!

Chorus! A little bit of chorus is the key to that tone.

I can tell he's using the neck pickup, but that's all I know.

Anyone else agree that his tone was well better back then, when he endorsed Ibanez? Much warmer imo.

Sounds like he just switched to another patch on his triaxis...

I'm sure someone else will jump in here with the exact details, but I think he was using the Triaxis in that instructional video.

Looks like the guitar is on a shelf and he's standing behind it....

this is probably due to his amps rather than his guitars.

his music man guitars are built with the same woods as an ibanez and both have bolt on necks with nearly identical pickups.

but instead of using a triaxis amp he's using road kings and lonestar amps.

Re: Help! Petrucci's sound in this clip..HOW?

He's back to using the Mesa Mark IV on the newest album, with some occasional Lonestar clean. The Mark IV supplied his "Spirit Carries On" tone IIRC which was one of his favorites from the past so he revisited the amp for the new album.
