Here we go again: From scratch a rebuild of a S470 Lots of work ahead.
Ok I decided since I got another S coming in a trade with Lo Pro and Burled Mahogany, I am going to totally redo this S470 since well its black and as much as I try to dress it up, I totally hate black.. So here we go.. From scratch..
First phase will be the biggest pain in the arse.. Get the old paint and sealer off the guitar. Anyone who has ever redone a guitar knows this sucks so bad.
After about 5hrs I got the top and the back sanded to the wood. I will work on the sides and horns tommorrow after work.. Right now my arms are so sore its not even funny.
As for what were going to do? I havent the foggiest.. I will let inspiration strike me as I go along.
With a small wipe of water to show the grain.
A mess of parts. I really need a guitar bench LOL
Stay Tuned...

Ummmm - I know this is a dumb question, but if you are going to do a solid colour over it, why get rid of the original finish that Ibanez went to great pains to get flat and smooth for you ..... doesn't it make as much sense just to sand, prime and spray over ...... unless you want some kind of translucent finish of course?
Just my two bob's worth BTW.......
The S is a really nice shape when you see it like that I must say.
Cheers,
David

well I have plans which means filling a few holes
..
Soooo even though Ibanez went to great pains to get it flat. I will have to go thru the same once im done. and ive been throwing around the idea of a veneered top
and even if I didnt do that. You never paint over a original finish thats just a amateur shortcut.. You always take the old off.

October 30th, 2006: Captains Log,
Well on to phase two, with the help of my friends Oscillating Spindle Sander I didnt know he had LOL.. Doing the sides and the horns was a breeze and took about 5 mins.. That saved me about 5 hrs of sanding by hand in those horns. LMAO guess it pays to have nice tools.
Anyways with that out of the way I decided to take the first major mod. The S series as beautiful as it is, its body edges are sharp and I dont like that. So I began rounding over the edges by hand..
This is a long and very tedious project but its rather simple to do so no biggie you just need a small rubber contour sander its basically a piece of rubber with different contours available, then you wrap sandpaper around it and get to hand sanding(will get pictures later). But its outcome will drastically change the way the S body will look and feel.
Here is a couple shots of the body now down to 100 grit
Here is a picture of the front edge which has the contour and the bottom edge that has the flat sharp edge of a normal S body.
STAY TUNED

Is that a 4-piece body? or am I reading the wood wrong?

i think it is a four peice.
i always like translucent colors on a guitar, so i'm excited to see what the future holds for this!

Ok on lookers here we are Nov. 1st 2006:
Got the bottom edges and horns rounded over. Doing this by hand is very very time consuming but there is no other way to do it. Since the edge is so radiused you cant use a round over bit on a router.
Anyways here is some updated pics..
AND THE MONEY SHOT.. Its so nice now
