I hate comments like that! We all know that that's a horrendous exaggeration. Those comments always make me feel like I don't practice nearly enough, like I should fail out of school and just practice all the time and just focus on that 24/7 and not have a life. Of course, we all know that's BS.

And really, practicing 12 hours a day really helped him alot!
I love the guy, but he needs some new licks!

Said it was pretty darn hard to do the playing and singing- and dread-tossing hair flips- backwards convincingly (yeah, like I could play like vai forward or backward convincingly ).

Hmm... I wonder- if you play this video backwards, do you get Satanic messages? Maybe it just works on lp's...
I remember that as well, Devin and Steve demonstrated it by singing a part of "in my dreams with you" backwards

Yeah, but like Satch, I would like to hear something...different!
But, as Tim Currey once said, "I didn't play[make] it[him] for you!!"

Re: How did this guy ever make it big?

Reading through this thread I had a funny mental image of Zakk blasting an intense Petrucci / Vai esque interlude in the middle of a song with Ozzy then lookup up, seeing a sea of confused leather-clad fans, panicking for a moment until hitting a pinch harmonic and swigging a beer to massive cheers from the now less confused fans.

Good point
Zakk's and Slash's audience isnt the Vai/Petrucci crowd. They dont care if he can play solo for 2 hours or not. That doesnt make them any less of a guitar players, he's playing for his audience, not a bunch of dorks sitting infront of their computer argueing about who can play the most notes in 4 seconds or is a gold plated trem sounds different than a cosmo one.
Personally as sloppy and simple as it is, I think Sweet Child O Mine is one of the best guitar solos ever.

You might want to check out Zakk in the "No More Tears" film clip.

To Elcid and Dutchie:

I totally agree with you. "Sweet Child o Mine" and "No More Tears" have two of the best solos in rock guitar.
If only Zakk still used the guitar he used in that video...the red/natural bullseye. So cool!!

Re: How did this guy ever make it big?

Zakk and Slash are not solo players period. Personally, I don't think they have enough chops to lure me to get into their musical efforts outside of Ozzy and GnR.

By comparison, Joe and Steve can do both (play in a band and be solo artists) and they could dance circles around zakk and slash with their eyes closed.

Re: How did this guy ever make it big?

It's all subjective really, there is no set definition of a great guitarist, like he must be able to do certain techniques and scales etc. The point of playing guitar is to make you feel good, to produce something that makes you think and feel, and all of the above guitarist do that in their own way.

no doubt, that solo is awesome, as is the stuff he plays right after the solo (during the breakdown). unfortunately, some people only equate technically proficient with good.
