Exactly! Zakk and Slash are among my favourite players and speak to me emotionaly more than Vai et al can.

Don't let David Coverdale hear you say that! He probably curses the day he got Vai to butcher Whitesnake to promote P&W!
Zakk has the chops,I just think he chooses not to use them for the sake of it,something the 'virtuoso' players could do with thinking about.
As for Slash,he may not have the chops, but he writes great riffs much like Joe Perry, you going to say Joe can't play?

Re: How did this guy ever make it big?

Oh my god, can we stop arguing this childish concept of who's better. "ya well my dad can beat up your dad". "oh yeah?????i can run faster than you in the school yard". How old are we? OK i am gonna say my final peace. So what if Zakk uses pinch harmonics in every song, show me a song vai doesnt use his whammy bar, and while we are at it someone better tell Eddie to stop tapping so much too. These are playing styles that make all these guitarist great. By the way just because Eddie probably does not know his Modes and probably does not sight read very well ( on guitar that is ) does that make him not as great as vai or satch????? Pleas lets just love the music and all of our guitar heros because who knows how long we will have them. Thank you i will now shut up.

BTW, the Zakk Wylde tune I mentioned is called "Farm fiddlin'". I'm listening to it on my iPhone right now. Mad chops. No singing either, ZW from the beginning to the end.

That CD also features "I understand completely" by Paul Gilbert, and there's an acoustic part in it that was actually sped up (Paul himself told me). I know a dude who wasted three months of his life and has almost gone crazy trying to reach anywhere near that speed. All because of a sound engineer's prank.

TO me Vai, Petrucci, etc etc are like watching the skills competition during the NHL all star break, kinda cool but not interesting. where as some less technical guitarists are like the actual game. Again, this is me, but For The Love of God bores me to tears, I'd rather listen to Layla (not the lame acoustic version) 100 times that FtOLG once.

If only Zakk still used the guitar he used in that video...the red/natural bullseye. So cool!!

I always thought that Red/Natural Standard should have been the signature guitar instead of the white/black Custom.

One note can say so much more than 64 note played within the same time sig. All the previosly mention players that are known for shredding can play such beautiful stuff but totally kill it when they go ape****.

A comment posted on the youtube page. Struck me as quite funny.

I just don't get it. How do these mediocre guitarist get such acclaim from the average person. Sometimes I wish Satch/Vai/Petrucci would etc would put together a mainstream band that would appeal to the masses, but with MONSTER guitar playing. Thankfully, there are a couple bands with decent players in the mainstream. But the public is missing out. When they idolize this nonsence in this Slash video, and haven't heard FTLOG or Cliffs of Dover, or Satch Boogie, it's a real loss.
I agree, but I have just stopped disagreeing with ppl and go on

I had always assumed that was his real speed. He can play close enough, anyways!

Personally as sloppy and simple as it is, I think Sweet Child O Mine is one of the best guitar solos ever.
Totally agreed Elcid. Zakk, to me, is an amazing guitarist who's more than capable on a guitar. Yngwie Malmsteen is utterly amazing on a guitar BUT he's boring as bat$hit to listen to as it's all the same. Steve Vai will never be equalled or beaten for what he has achieved on a guitar but that doesn't mean that other guitarists can't do amazing sounding music too.

Re: How did this guy ever make it big?

when i started out playing the guitar i looked up to this guitar players, then as time passed by, i got to love the stuff vai, satch and other players do.. i still give credited that they are one of the best players.. yjm, vai jp, pg and others are just from another dimension of guitar playing.. all these guitar players have given inspiration to aspiring guitar players to improve their playing..so there is no need for comparing these guitar players, they are the best of what they do in their own rights..
