I just don't get it. How do these mediocre guitarist get such acclaim from the average person. Sometimes I wish Satch/Vai/Petrucci would etc would put together a mainstream band that would appeal to the masses, but with MONSTER guitar playing. Thankfully, there are a couple bands with decent players in the mainstream. But the public is missing out. When they idolize this nonsence in this Slash video, and haven't heard FTLOG or Cliffs of Dover, or Satch Boogie, it's a real loss.

love clicking on posted youtube links, it took me on such a crazy ride of various youtube guitar themed videos, and for some reason, i always end up on Paul gilbert vs Marty Friedman, on the japanese game show.

You can't deny he's been using the same licks for over 20 years now. And he still uses pinch harmonics like he just learned to do them yesterday.

All due respect to the guy though, he's great at what he does.

Re: How did this guy ever make it big?

I can't argue that with you. But he is still way above mediocre. I would also like to add that I have never seen him use a fan to blow his pretty hair around while he plays... Oh boy I'm gonna get it now. I just dissed the g o d of Jemsite...

Funny video, but what made it funnier was the first comment below it lol:

Absolutely loved all the "dance steps" Vai did there. Very funny.

Re: How did this guy ever make it big?

lol, that's hilarious. although he accidentally played a really nice lick when he went up the neck, kinda breaking character.

zakk is a great player, unfortunately, his primary focus is bls and very uninspired ozzy stuff as of late (although 'no rest for the wicked' was awesome). his chicken picking and country styled playing is very nice and he has some great acoustic stuff too. check out the pride and glory stuff if you have a chance, it's great. right before he started detuning too much, lol.

slash may not be the most technical player, but i love his vibrato and phrasing. he definitely plays with a lot of authority and his tone is so simple, yet it works. i don't think he'll ever be able to live up to the legacy of 'appetite' though.

Not saying he can't play. But in the realm of players we deal with on Jemsite, he wouldn't be able to hold a guitar aficionado's attention for 60 minutes like a Satch or Petrucci. He's great at his 10 to 20 sec post bridge solos. But make him play guitar solos non stop for an an hour or 2? I think his bag of tricks would run out long before the clock does. So in the grand world of players, including the upper echelon, he's mediocre. At best. There's guys around here that could play him into the ground.

I liked his tune from Guitars That Rule The World CD. it starst out as country and ends with heavy metal, while maintaining the same underlying melody.

Yeah, that used to be on the vai-dot-com site (might still be there, for all I know). I rememeber reading somewhere that the whole video was recorded backwards (well, it was recorded forwards but they did everything backwards and then played the video backwards...). Said it was pretty darn hard to do the playing and singing- and dread-tossing hair flips- backwards convincingly (yeah, like I could play like vai forward or backward convincingly ).

Hmm... I wonder- if you play this video backwards, do you get Satanic messages? Maybe it just works on lp's...
