How's My Mixing?

Hey, just thought I'd post this for fun, to get some opinions and to post my homework on the metaphorical fridge This is an assignment I already handed in. We had to choose two songs (each from a different tape) in the studio and mix it. The first assignment (which I don't have online because the CD won't rip into my computer for some reason) was to mix using only levels and panning, the second (the one posted here) was levels, panning, EQ, and reverb. Here's some info:

Mixed from 2", 24-track analogue tape
Sony APR-24 tape machine
Sony MPX3036 console
EMT Reverb
Recorded at Emac Studios (engineered by Joe Vaughan)
Mixed down to a Tascam CD-R burner

The first song is by a band called SectorSeven.
962
962 (instrumental)

The second song is by a singer named Denise Pelley (I think? Can't completely remember if that's her name lol).
Sparrow
Sparrow (instrumental)

I liked the mix on the second song a lot...

On the first one it seems like the vocal was too far removed from the rest, unless this was the intention. It also didn't seem to cut very well through the guitars...

Yeah, I had three hours to do all four mixes, and this was my second time mixing on this gear (first time with the EQ and reverb involved). Looking back at the first song I could have EQ-ed the snare to be a bit brighter, the vocals are drenched in reverb, etc. I also like the second song better. The first song sounded great until I started adding reverb and EQ (because I was required to use them for the assignment I had a hard time feeling ok with using them too subtly for fear of the prof not hearing them at all ).
