Great video as usual! How do you think an old Japanese Boss DS-1 would sound compared to a modded one? I've heard the Japanese ones are alot better.

Re: JimmyJ does a modded DS1 Pedal Review...[vid]

There have been 2 changes (or 3 versions) during the life of the DS-1 pedal, so far. Each mainly involved changing of the op-amp chip, plus a couple of more minor modifications. Oh and of course they moved manufacture of the pedal to Korea.

The 3 versions have a noticeable difference in sound. The newest pedals sound the most fuzzy and brittle. While the original Japanese sounds the warmest, due partly to the Toshiba op-amp. Its important to note that all of the stock pedals have a nasty tendency to really mud out on some settings when driving a tube amp.

Most of the pedal modders improve the sound by changing the values of some electronic components, improving the quality of some, and also some minor adjustments to the circuit. Even though the DS-1 is a classic great old pedal, all the modded ones sounded SIGNIFICANTLY better. The one we do at ET Guitars sounds really good, there are a couple of little twists in our mod that make the sound quite original. The most important things are that it does not mud out at all when driving a tube amp, and the sound is really thick and warm.

p.s. A warm thanks again to you Jim for putting that review up!!!

it looks from the outside that it has a keeley mod done to it .

the keeley mod takes the stock caps and cuts them out in favor of larger ones , i think only two resistors are replaced in the keeley

Great video Jimmy it blew me away i cracked me self up when you did the A/B great work keep it up, yeah etguitars do change the caps only to show that it has been modified cause the boss caps are pretty normal.

Just one question jimmy which settings did you have the SDS-1 on?

no it just looks like what keeley does to his pedals , he adds the mini toggle and changes the color of the power led and adds an extra led as a sort of distortion diode , it is cool because once it hits the distortion point the led lights up . anyways the bigger caps help to pull the highend chainsaw buzz out of the curcuit and help to round out the tone into a more fluid sound .

http://www.robertkeeley.com/product.php?id=10

i tried doing to mod myself and couldn't ever get the ultra mod to work , but i got something close to the SEM mode . it sounded like more of a liquid fuzz, overdirver, very cool for zz top style stuff but a little impractical for myself so i gave it to my music teacher in exachange for a couple of lessons .

i tired again but this time didn't get any sound out of the pedal , come to find out i messed up the pc boards flow and i just got fed up and havn't messed with it since .

pedal building isn't hard , the hardest part is finding out what you did wrong because your bound to do something wrong , there are just too many little parts to mess up .

anyways back to topic , the pedal sounded very cool , in a way simular to keeley .
