Most versatile guitarist at the moment?

I already knew Guthrie Govan is an amazing guitarist, but this?

He emulates a dozen top guitarists.. Check him out:

Just mind boggling...

EDIT: post 666? That can't be good...

Cool. To me the striking thing about GG is that not only is he a great guitarist, but he's a great musician in that he can play and it sounds "musical". And that's a rarity.

If I'm honest, I'd have to say that I think Joel Hoekstra is a better all rounder, and I prefer his material.

Guthrie is great and all, no arguments there, but I don't think that he's the be all to end all of guitarists.

GG is great to emulate other players, and he is extremely good. But, I did not find his album Erotic Cakes good at all. For me it was not very musical. Rather a showcase of what he can do. Fun for some, not for me.

This year I might get to see him and observe a lesson or two. Should be fun.

I disagree about Joel, I don't think he's as versatile as Guthrie. Joel is great though, no doubt.

Nah, Joel is too generic and sterile sounding for my tastes. (at least the music I've listened to on his site-sounds like elevator muzak to me)

Re: Most versatile guitarist at the moment?

You probably listened to some pretty random stuff. Joel is an awesome player who flips between styles all the time. No way is he generic.

I don't like every song he's made, but some of his tracks are fantastic. His sense of humor is out of this world! Great guy to talk to.

Different strokes for different folks...

I still definitely think that anybody who likes Guthrie's music should check Joel out.

I also have my reservations about naming "the most versatile guitarist." Just because a guitarist is very competent in a particular style doesn't mean he's ever going to play very much in that style.

Re: Most versatile guitarist at the moment?

The dude has talent no doubts. Sucks that the days of someone of his caliber becomming a "Guitar God" like Vai or Satch is over. The dude could be one.
