My 1st bluegrassy/country jam recording.

Hey everyone!!

Country isn't my passion, but I play in an country band.

myspace.com/chriswoodwardmusic

After playing the the band for 4 years, I figured it was time to start playing like a country player. So I spent a hour and came up with this. The tune isn't really new. It's the same song as in my youtube vid here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftbsI0YuzIw

But with a different flavor. And here it is:

I'm going to spend some more time on it, but I pretty well like how it's coming along. I still have to put some mandolin on there.

Drum loop sample
Acoustic rhythm and Banjo model on Line 6 Variax acoustic 700.
Bass guitar Warwick Thumb through Avalon U5
Lead guitar on Tak with dead strings through Avalon U5

More Line6 Variax700 Acoustic audio sample sounds here:

I just bought a mixer to use with recording the other, which got me in a recording mood. This was the 1st thing I recorded with the mixer. I 'think' it will help with tones, but it certainly makes thing easier. This only about 30 secs. http://chriswoodwardmusic.com/myspac...ntry%20jam.mp3

Later, Darin

I like where it's heading..... But I'm not too sure you'll find too many country/chicken pickin players on here. It's got a faint kinda EJ feel.....

Darin, how can you be in a pop/country/rock band and not be all up on those double stops and a fingerpickin wiz kid??

I like it. It's a danceable Two Step. I can't help but think of the ubiquitous Telecaster solo for a song / piece like that....

I got the country instructional book and cd, I got Brad Paisley CD's...... but Just like I don't got the "blues" in me, I don't country pickin in me either. It's coming around, but it's not natural for me. I grew up listening to White Snake and Night Ranger in high school when I was learning how to play. I think you have to have a natural ability to feel the country riffs in order to play them well. I can play the riffs, but it just doesn't sound like a REAL country player double stoppin when I do it.

You have a point..... I guess it all reverts back to your early instruction and roots. My father was a musician as well as my grandfather.... both country pickers. But I grew up on the Beatles, Hendrix, Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes..... then it was early southern rock to jazz. Instruction was music theory, technique. So I gathered a bag of trix from everywhere. The hardest thing for me was finger picking that I never mastered. But that got me to hybrid picking. The country riffs I worked on mostly through studio work and technique instruction.

I'm really trying to learn country (I think it's one of the most underlooked types of guitar playing out there; some real great pickers are country players). Paisley is an amazing player, as is Hiland.

I think the best thing you can do is immerse yourself in any genre you have a interest in mastering. Besides the more styles you can play the larger your chop vocabulary becomes. That to me only opens more doors for work, writing, and expressing yourself.

Darin is the lucky one..... he's hooked up with a act that has potential, and he'll overcome the lack of "country" or "blues" in his playing. Personally I'll bet he's got it, but just hasn't found the "love" for it inside himself yet.

Re: My 1st bluegrassy/country jam recording.

Here's a little something I recorded the other day. It's doesn't even have a 'solo'. But I like the tones alot. The banjo and acoustic are from the Line6 Variax700, and the bass is a Warwick 5 string Thumb, that I'm sadly about to part with. Sometimes I record short little things like this just working on tones before I invest a bunch of time recording a whole song. It's only 700k.

The guitar is a Shecter my daughter just bought with the coil taps, sounds pretty good.

I tried some Dobro, but I can't play it very well, so I buried it in the mix pretty deep.

Cool stuff Darin. Thanks for sharing.

I liked what you said on your youtibe video about ,"watch your feet, I drop a few notes" - I laughed pretty hard at that comment.

I'm not a big country picker but I play one on TV

Seriously though, I like country picking and am trying to learn more Chet Atkins - he was the master in my book. He fused jazz with country that changed the sound of country western guitar playing forever.

Funny story, I used to jam with some buddies playing heavy rock stuff for fun years ago and one of the guys GF said, "play something I know", so I asked her what she wanted us to play and just to be silly she said, "play something country!", knowing full well we didn't play any country. I started a generic CW riff and the other guys jumped in and before we knew it we actually made our own (albeit very corny) country song that I aptly named "My Hanky Panky Little Ditty" which has stuck with me for the past 12 years and my band plays it onstage live now to this day. We actually get requests for it - go figure?
