My first complete recording project in the basement

I finally recorded a complete song in the litte computer/studio setup i put down here. I'm very happy with the results.

The project: with our 2nd anniversary (as a couple) coming up, i wanted to write a song for my g/f. I'm not great at lyrics...everything I've ever written sounds contrived to me. I also didn't want to be derivative or say the same crap that everyone else says. Also didn't want to write a boring ballad.

So i started with 'how can i write a love song that's not just another one?' and wrote a pop song.

Took a couple of days to write the music, a few more to write the words. I gave it to her with a vocal track that was just "okay". This week i re-recorded all the vocals and I mixed this morning. I'm pretty happy with it and i'm proud of the comptuer for handling SO much (although the software got a little wacky in the last few days).

I'm using Adobe Audition (formerly known as CoolEdit) on a PC with 1GB RAM and a lot of HD space. In the last section, I'm running 19 Tracks with no latency. YAY!

For those who are looking for blazing, shred guitar, move on...there's just a little solo under the last chorus.

I'm not totally convinced about the mix, so I'll take some constructive criticism if anyone has any. but don't hurt my feelings

Nice. I'd drop the bassdrum a bit and raise the guitar a bit.

Very heartfelt lyrics.

Re: My first full project in the basement

Dude, if I was a girl, and you wrote that for me, I'd...nevermind. As unromantic as I may be, it put a smile on my face anyway.

The only critique I'd throw out there is that there's a little disparity in volume of some of the vocals, specifically between verse/chorus and the "background vocals" are more foreground vocals.

You rock, Kenny!

Re: My first full project in the basement

Hey that was nice, definetly a change from what one hears around here.
At first i thought it was going to be a little boring, but not at all!

I would drop the backing vocals a bit and raise the acoustic guitars a bit.

I like the drums a lot, can you tell me more about them?

Tnx!

Re: My first full project in the basement

Argh. Thanks for the feedback guys. Took a few days...i was getting a complex!

I realized about the background vocals when i listened back in an out-of-studio environment. It so hard to mix when you're so intimate with the song and you know every little thing that's happening and your ears are tired.

Going to go back and remix them now...i do LOVE the backgrounds though...i had much fun writing/recording them.

Thanks! I'm a piano player first, then a guitar player, for anybody who didn't already know that.

The piano is from the Triton Extreme. It's a modification i did off preset L001

I seldom listen to one of these "clips" all the way through, but this one I DID!
Nice music and lyrics. Do another one!
