Nelly Furtado & Steve Vai?

I know this is kind of old (2002), but I figured I'd post it just incase nobody has seen this. What do you call this? Nothing but a disgrace to the entire music community, and to Vai himself.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=yfKIapgaGEw

All those people at the grammy's probably see him as just another session musician.

don't understand why you think that. Maybe you can explain why you feel like that.

I can see where he comes from.

Nelly Furtado is pretty much just another dime a dozen pop singer. Don't get me wrong, that isn't necessarily a bad thing. But Steve is definitely a better musician, and she gets more attention.

I think that's what he was saying.

I thought it was kinda weird to see someone as mainstream as NF, on stage next to SV.

Re: Nelly Furtado & Steve Vai?

she's supposed to get more attention. she's the frontperson, not vai (the guitarist). only guitarists would expect that.

and nothing wrong with being 'just another session musician'. some of the most frightening musicians are session players or part of the backing band. greg howe has backed enrique iglesias & justin timberlake, andy timmons has backed olivia newton john and the list goes on. it's a very good living and nothing to be ashamed of. these guys play their role and make people like nelly furtado look good--and get paid well for doing so.

Agreed 100% with rasta, All session players are killer players! But whenever they were backing singers they just back them up real good. I'm sure Mr vai is having fun while backing nelly.

if people 'liked' based on who is the better musician.. everyone would be listening to technical jazz/fusion and classical all day wouldn't they? (i've been getting into jazz fusion lately, but it's just a point)

but we like based on sound and feeling, and more people can get into nelly furtado than Vai, it's just a fact, there are more people in the world that aren't musicians and guitarists than those that are no?

bonehead189- Vai would have loved it. it is about fun and music, not being centre stage isn't it?

Dude, you simple wrong on this. Anytime we can get one of our guys in front of alot of people, it's a very good thing. Vai may have picked up a handful of fans from that performance. And more instrumental fans is a good thing. There in no exclusivity to our craft. That was a darn good performance on top of it too. Exposure is the first step. You got to break non-players in slowly. The average person has no idea what we do or why. But you can bet they were well diggin what happened on that stage. It was well played, and sweet as can be. You don't give a noob Starbucks espresso for their first cup of coffee. You start with something mild, like Blue Mountain, then work them up to the espresso. Vai made the right choice by taking that gig. If Vai had done this:

He would have cleared the room.

Re: Nelly Furtado & Steve Vai?

Was surfin other Vai vids on the utube and found this in the comment section. Was a response to someone that said Malm was better than Vai. I thought it was funny and had to post it 'somewhere'.

"banging on a beer can like a chimp would be your gig"

Have you seen this Vai demonstration of Freak Show?
