Re: oooh new Vai DVD

For what it's worth, I was at the show that was taped for this DVD. It was one of those experiences where you wish it wouldn't end but you know it has to. I have been looking forward to this DVD for a long time, first because I'm a huge Vai fan but also because I was there! Unfortunately I won't be able to enjoy it now because, thanks to Spagbol, I'll be looking for all of the mistakes! Just kidding.

Overall I'm excited to get this DVD (and the CD) and spend hours staring at the screen and remembering how amazing Vai and the whole band were that night.

Re: oooh new Vai DVD

I just bought the DVD+CD combo and downloaded the free extra CD and holy crap is it awful.... I still can't understand why Steve did that tour with two violin players. It simply sounds terrible...

Awful in what way? Sound quality or just not caring for the violinists? My impulse buy meter is flying high on this at the moment.

Sounds terrible = IMPOSSIBLE.

The sound quality of the performance itself is great but the choice of having 2 (distorted in some cases) violins perform guitars is simply flat out wrong IMHO. It only works in a few cases (like in "The Crying Machine") when the violins are backing Steve in different 2- or 3-part harmonies so you don't directly hear the violins. Plus I don't understand why Steve's guitar is so upfront in the mix you can barely hear the band some times "The Audience Is Listening"?

Yes, it does IMHO . Like his last album "Sound Theories", well at least the first CD.

So do I, when it comes to guitars, drums, keyboards, horns even, but a classical orchestra or just violins for that matter. Flat out, NO!

I watched the whole dvd last nite at the premier and for the most part i thought it was very good. like u said tho, sometimes i could barely hear what the band was playing because steves guitar over powered the entire band. aside from that, the performance was very entertaining. From the violin solos, to daves performance, it was really really cool.

Re: oooh new Vai DVD

Downloaded the digital CD that I got with the pre-order. I can see some of the reason for negative comments about the violins and the mixing levels. Still, I thought it was pretty good. I'm very excited for the DVD and the CD after listening.

I just think it is a bad match the guitar and violins and it was also the one reason why I didn't go see the tour back then.

André

Re: oooh new Vai DVD

Funnily enough, I saw the tour in Manchester (UK) and my impression of the sound was that Steve's guitar sounded lost and a bit muddy.

Probably just a problem on that particular night tho - I've seen Vai several times at that same venue (the Apollo Theatre) and sounds was normally top notch...
