I wasn't excited about this one until I watched that youtube preview.... I'm now very excited. Bit of same old, with a bit of new, and the production looks top notch. Definitely buying.

Unfortunately, I was almost the exact opposite. Being a violinist by profession, and having seen the show live I was looking forward to the DVD of this particular group of musicians but after seeing the preview, I saw at least one massive and glaringly obvious overdub. Why Vai would release as a trailer a section that contains such (and with close-up of his hands for goodness sake) is beyond me and makes me think that the entire product will be riddled with overdubs.
That is not what I'm after. What I want is to see and hear Vai's live performances. If I want studio audio I'll buy a CD. The point of live DVD is to get the live performances. If the live performance had errors, don't include that song or put in a version from another show that was good or just suck it up and accept it was a less than perfect performance and release it warts and all. Yes it's hard stuff to play and no, I couldn't ever do half as good a job but that's not the point. I'm paying to see someone play live and what I'm getting at some points is some miming (obviously this only goes for the DVD not the actual live show!).

Not try to be an ass but it's really off putting watching something and having your brain tell you it's wrong cos it's not what you're actually hearing. I know a Vai show is more than just hearing him play stuff but it's horses for courses and different people will want different things from his show. Personally, I've seen him many times live and have maxed out on his artsy prancing about for the moment and just want to see him play his stuff with attitude and flair.

So my thoughts before seeing the trailer was 'Awesome!!!' but after seeing the trailer I thought 'meh'.

Just my opinion of course.

P.S. One example is at 1.43 of the 5.51 long trailer. Right hand moves up the neck twice but the notes actually only change once. There are other examples in the trailer too...

I agree with you. I don't let it spoil my enjoyment, but I'd much rather we got the performance as it was on the night, warts n' all.

What song was the "flub" in? Could Dave have been playing the other part you were referring to as "miming"? I'm not all that interested in seeing it over to look for that spot, however if you tell me the song, I would attempt to check it out. I was checking out the 7 minute one on his site and there wasn't a counter/timer...

It's like going to see a magician and being offended that he didn't really saw himself in half. Or being upset at watching major league baseball and knowing that they are on steroids and not just playing clean the way they did 50 years ago. No one puts out a "live" product! For me, if I wanted to see Vai stuff played wrong, I'd watch myself in the mirror.

Hold on a sec, just because the trailer has overdubs doesn't mean it will be the same on the DVD.

Does it ?

Not necessarily no.

But on the Commentary for the Live at the Astoria DVD he talks openly about fixing loads of notes and drums etc.

The tapping section of "Building The Church". It's obvious when you see it. Check Youtube for the 5.51 trailer where you can use the counter.

Not really, with a magician you are expecting to be fooled. You know what you see is not really what you has happened in the physical world. Being wrong-footed is part of the deal and what you are absolutely expecting to happen.

Now, I know it's accepted in general that on live DVDs there will be overdubs and as far as I know, Vai may well put a notice on the DVD stating that there are overdubs. Fine, I have no problem with that, really. I just was expressing disappointment that I would liked to have had a proper live show without overdubs, or at least such obvious ones.

As far as nobody putting out a real 'live' product, you're wrong. For a start, any orchestra or classical musician that puts out a 'live' product is 100% live (unless it's meant to be a project with studio work too). Almost all live Zappa stuff was proudly without overdubs unless explicitly stated (liner notes... "There are absolutely no overdubs..." etc), and then it was usually not really overdubbed but spliced with studio material etc.

Me too, but I've just had enough of that for now. Like I said, horses for courses and it's only my opinion.

Blacksheep, I've got to go out but will try and grab the section or tab out what he plays visually vs what you hear later on. I could of course be entirely wrong on closer inspection.

It's no biggie and I'm sure it'll be a great DVD. Shoulda kept my mouth shut!! lol

I meant no one puts out live stuff anymore...There was a great Rod Stewart live thing where they actually pointed out the mistakes and made no apologies for it...
