Richie Kotzen

I believe this video was posted somewhere here before, but I can't find it. Obviously I don't much about his playing even though I've checked him out a little before. I didn't know he was such a shredder. Plus, he has a lot of soul.

Re: Richie Kotzen

Wow, I'm digging his voice, tone, lyrics, playing, and overall song writing. I'm going to buy some of his stuff. How can he not have made it bigger or been more popular?

Re: Richie Kotzen

I feel that he is running the scales in that video doing the solo except for that funky type of rhythm that I find it amazing. His phrasing is not that appealing imho.

I've always dug Richie Kotzen's playing and overall tone. Just an amazing player that doesn't get enough credit.

Re: Richie Kotzen

Check out Poison's Native Tongue album.

He played on that. It's a fun listen.

Re: Richie Kotzen

Richie is great and does't get the credit. one of the biggest mistakes he did was get with poison. sure, maybe he was trying to broaden his horizons but that's like putting george lynch in faster *****cat or enuff z nuff...you get what i' saying. richie is really f'n good. pick up the album full tilt....i believe that is the title. it's jazz with his lead tones and greg howe plays on it. it's crazy! get richie's first couple albums on metalblade records from the mid 80's if you really want to see what he's capable of. some of the recordings don't sound the best since he recorded them himself in his home way back then on an 8 track. he takes tapping and phrasing to another level.

Re: Richie Kotzen

Check out Motherhead Family Reunion for some awesome Kotzen licks. It's a really cool bluesy/funk type of album but he shreds all over the place. Very tasty stuff.

Re: Richie Kotzen

I saw him at the Cornford club a couple of years ago. He absolutely floored me - excellent guitarist, songwriter and vocalist with an awesome live tone.

He was at the absolute opposite end of what I was expecting.

His solo stuff's very good - search out Mother head's family reunion and Socialite tracks as a starting point.

He is a good Guitar player and has been around for quite a while. He has worked with Poison and Greg Howe plus many solo recordings!

The album is "Tilt". There's also "Project". Both albums are superb, though I wouldn't say they are AT ALL jazz, but Fusion. I agree totally with what you said, he probably deserves more credit than he gets and it is indeed like putting George Lynch in Faster P*ussycat or some crap like that. However, I only wish Richie wouldn't sing. On the other hand, I say the same thing about most singers! Kotzen's instrumental stuff is mostly all great. First thing I bought by him was the Electric Joy album back in the 80's. I love the rough, home-made feel of it actually. The best things I've heard since then are those albums with Greg Howe. The playing is mind boggling.

Re: Richie Kotzen

yeah, i wasn't sure of the name...been a few years since listened to it. you're totally right, it's more like fusion jazz shred....whatever. it's great. i agree with the singing although there is one album i like by him where he goes off on and his singing isn't too bad. can't remember the album name but a couple tracks are...things remembered never die....and "she" along with "wheels can fly." i didn't much care for the electric joy. he really mellowed out on that one...maybe now i will appreciate it more since it has been years. one thing that turned me off on satriani is his singing. i stopped listening to him after that. that was a long time ago. i just destroyed it for me.

"Fever Dream". I got it in the early 90's, I think. Hate the vocals, they are bloody awful. Sorry Richie.
