Re: RUSTY COOLEY 08 Betcha Can't Play This

Well I listened to them.

I don't like rusty but yeah that band is good. The vocals are over done even for a prog power metal band. And I'm an Angra fan.

So basically I'm saying that I would become a Rusty Cooley fan if someone could once and for all proove that he isn't a jerk who talks down to everyone else who plays guitar.

And I still think his soloing is more jacking off than making love.

Are we still talking about guitar?

Wait, when has Rusty talked down about other players? He's said good things about Shawn Lane and Holdsworth before.

Granted, I'm not a big fan of Rusty's songs/band, but I don't understand all the negativity.

Didn't Rusty play Jemfest one year? I thought he was well liked on this forum until I saw this thread.

I've seen lots of Rusty videos and he's always seemed pretty normal.
I have yet to see where Rusty is talking down to anyone. Can you post links to that?

yeah, I admit his technique is pretty beastly from what i've seen of him but he seems to not understand what music is, and he is a douche about it

No harm intended though my friend. Just stating what I've experienced just as you did so.
JJEMMER777 you seemed to have a different (more favorable) view of Rusty last year when BigShred posted about taking lessons with Rusty. What changed? Did Rusty steal your lunch money or something?

Newbieguitarmaker, last year you wanted lessons from Rusty. You even wanted someone to tell him to post some online stuff so you could learn. Now you think he is a douche. What gives?

For what it is worth I am curious as to why the negative comments. Can anyone point to an article or video source to back up the negative view of Rusty. People are making him out the be the new Yngwie. With Yngwie at least we had documentation of his attitudes in the media.

Re: RUSTY COOLEY 08 Betcha Can't Play This

I ran into Rusty at Dream Theaters show here in Houston and he was telling me he was backstage with John playing johns guitars and only had nice things to say about Dream Theater and the Ernie Ball Petrucci's.

If Rusty touts the guitars Dean is making for him, can you really blame him?
So does Vai, Lynch, Gilbert, Page, and every other guitar player who gets an endorsement.

Rusty CAN be really musical if he wants too. The slow parts are quite good imo:

Re: RUSTY COOLEY 08 Betcha Can't Play This

I certainly won't speak ill of the guy. I've never met him or talked to him. From what I've seen of his playing he's got mounds of technique but his phrasing and musicianship seem to be lacking. Which is a common thing that happens with guys who's playing is overly technical. I know a guy who's an amazing technical guitarist, possibly more so than Rusty. He needs to work on his phrasing and he needs to work on his musicality. Everything he plays sounds like an absurdly complicated excercise (rusty and the guy i mentioned.)

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm wondering too. From what I've seen, he seems like a really cool, down-to-earth guy.

Re: RUSTY COOLEY 08 Betcha Can't Play This

i have multiple cds of cooley, i didnt want to judge him just by his videos.. after listening and examining.. my thoughts are

-his songs are lacking in structure.. he gets an awesome idea but then ditches it and shreds without having enough repetitions.. the transitions are very weak in his solo album.
-he blows his load at the first of his solo, he has no room to climax..
-most of his solos have very little musicality.

frig off if your going to be a baby and cry about what i just said.. i went out and got is cd and had a listen, the guy just musically sucks to my ears.. (waits for the 'something wrong with your ears' comment followed by an emoticon).. his phrasing is decent and he has great vibrato, bends, and expression (at times.) but he doesn't showcase it in his music.. he worries too much about the great race, and who can play the craziest atonal wide stretches.. oh yah, I have one of his instructionals as well.. its like 2 hours or so and I got maybe 1 or 2 licks that i could actually use in a real-song situation.. it was mostly technique that you MIGHT be able to apply to a real lick or melody in the future..
