Normally I don't respond to such questions ...

But IMO , Steve has a lot of soul , ever listened to For the love of god , Warm regards , Flexable album , Passion and Warfare album , Reflections Album , and all the rest of his albums ... It might be possible you'll consider of taking 'nother opinion ...

Re: STEVE VAI DONT HAVE SOAL?

Soul & "The Blues" are two slightly different things.

Before I continue, let me say that I am a HUGE Vai fan...you won't find too many more out there so deeply into his music.

That being said, you can have soul and still not be able to play the blues, but you can't play the the blues without soul.

Steve has soul in terms of passion and emotion and expressing that emotion thru his instrument. He does it extraordinarily well and is able to capture it on recordings (which is not easy to do). However, Steve is NOT a blues player. He will even tell you that.

If you listen to this clip and think that you're hearing good blues playing, you really should go out and listen to some of the 'real' blues players.

Listen to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Clapton, BB King, Albert Collins, Buddy Guy....the list is very long, but sorry guys...Vai is not on it.

He's still my favorite, but it ain't blues.

Re: STEVE VAI DONT HAVE SOAL?

Guess I'll go against the trend here too..... but that's a blues based backing track for sure, but all the guitar work is more like pentatonic riffing as opposed to straight blues. Don't get me wrong, we all know Steve can play, and I guess you could say this is "his" version of the blues. To me, blues is a feeling your trying to convey. Not just guitar "theatrics" (ie. finger tapping in blues???). Go listen to some traditional delta blues or some Memphis or Chicago style blues and then listen to this again. I think you'd see what I mean. As far as soulful material..... he's been putting that out for a long time. BTW what's soal????

+1 on what kenny says, anyway steve can't really play da blues, to me he sounded kinda quirky playing the blues, I think even malmsteen plays the blues better than Mr Vai IMO

Re: STEVE VAI DONT HAVE SOAL?

that was really, really bad.

whenever you guys rip into Korn and other musicians you guys should relisten to that MP3 as a direct counterpoint if not checkmate.

steve is phenemonal in his genre and style of music but that does not include the blues... glen

Re: STEVE VAI DONT HAVE SOAL?

Number one i would never consider clapton a true blues player. Number 2 blues never got any better than Robert Johnson with one guitar. Electric blues is for posers with soft fingertips. And Steve knows he cant play blues well at all. Its not his thing, but to say he has no soul is shortminded. Insert Passion and warfare and i defy you to not find the soul in his playing.

You can't compare Robert Johnson's blues to the moderm white-man electric blues. They are two different things and each great in their own way. I wouldn't call SRV (for example) a 'poser' with soft fingertips. Dude played 13's and he was absolutely killer. Just my .02

If I was a betting man, I'd say that Steve could play traditional blues very easily....he'd have to work on the tonality of it, but it would be relatively easy.

It sounds as if he is trying to stay away from that at all costs. Sort of like he NEVER wants anyone to hear him play blues without Vai'isms, because that would be too normal.
