Steve vai interview about his depression
Not sure if this has been posted before, but this is part 2 of a 3 part interview of Vai, here he talks about his depression, before making it big in the music industry. It was really interesting...

Re: Steve vai interview about his depression
Wow, great find there dude.
What Vai is saying is very true. That's really special that he opened up like that in that interview.
My mood is definitely reflected in my art, and then my art directly affects my mood. It can become a self perpetuating nightmare that just gets worse and worse. I guess brilliance can come of such a thing, but at the cost of a person.

Re: Steve vai interview about his depression
Yeah i can understand, i am constantly depressed when im not either playing the guitar writing music, and Iam constantly beating myself down as to why music is not my career.... Recently finished an album of guitars and music, i really florished during that process and feel music is my true talent, even though I have others, but music has been my only real secret weapon since a young age.... It defines who i am and I honestly believe that GAS is a direct response to not being involved in music enough. The more you dont write play or practise or perform, the more you wantto collect guitars etc... Its like a sub conscious way for your brain and soul to hold on to an all to important part of your existence...

Re: Steve vai interview about his depression
I had to look up
dilapidated
in the dictionary.
Anyway, this was interesting. I always wondered about his experiences with depression, since listening to 'Sex & religion' and reading about what the title track of 'Alive in an ultra world' is about.
Thanks for posting.

Re: Steve vai interview about his depression
It's always interesting to hear what an artist was thinking, feeling, doing, etc. at certain points in their career. Vai always speaks the truth. After listening to that interview, it really does make sense and it shows in ones playing/music. Very cool interview, thanks for sharing.

Re: Steve vai interview about his depression
He's right on all counts. It's really easy to be miserable, and your view of the world is a self fulfilling prophesy.
The (somewhat unsatisfying) corollary is that being happy is hard work.

Re: Steve vai interview about his depression
sounds like he made it out without meds or hospitalization, which is always good. i speak from experience when i say that depression is absolutely the worst form of human suffering known. personally, i think the term is thrown around way too easily these days... i give credit to anyone that's open to sharing their experience, famous rock star or not.

Re: Steve vai interview about his depression
It would be interesting to see a study that tracked depression amoung musicians who make different types of music.

Re: Steve vai interview about his depression
Great interview.
It's also interesting to notice how many people have such illness these days.
Apart from the people who confuse "
sadness
" with "
depression
", of course.

That is extremely true. The more I worry about playing, the less I care about new gear.

Sad but true! Now that I've read that and reflect on it, it really makes sense. I thought I was doing well with controlling my GAS, but I've been playing a lot lately. And, when I hadn't been, I was buying, selling and trading things like crazy. Thanks for shedding some light on this!
