Steve Vai solo Toronto 1988
It's raw.
I mean, it's really raw.
...but it's beautiful.

I ripped this at max quality, try to listen through the noise, to the heart and soul of the music.

Holy crap... i was at that show. That was a loooong time ago. But i do remember him doing most of the solo on a JEM 777DY, if memory serves, and by the end, he was on his hands and knees, pushing the guitar across the stage by its neck, while doing some two-handed tapping thing.

Holy crap indeed! Well remembered, you're absolutely right.
I ripped this from video and at around the three minute mark when the "chaotic noise" starts in earnest, young Steve is on the floor, writhing and molesting his guitar. The video is such low res, I can't be 100% certain that it's a 777DY, but it sure looks like one to me.

Hmmm I don't think it's the link, but rather the site.
Do a search on hamand.fts and there are several threads referencing various clips etc hosted on that site....and none of them are working.
Hopefully they get their site back up soon...vintage Vai is always worth checking out.

Re: Steve Vai solo Toronto 1988
Don't tease me like that! I couldn't see the video either! Dang I wanted to see that! But, you know, I like watching him more recently than that. He was GREAT then, but he freaked me out back then for some strange reason. Like he was searching, but confident, and completely able. Probably because I was so much worse then than now (like I'm good now ha ha I suck) I'm more comfortable with "himself" now, and I think he would agree too, imho. But, that's just my ho. Of course I can't speak for himself. To me, he justs gets better, both chops wise and compositionally. Especially the latter. I think that I like his music as much as I like his playing. Steve, you're a wonderful work in progress! God has blessed you and has blessed us with you. Especially the latter. Like he'll read this. Darn I tend to ramble..........sorry.

I don't think
Steve Vai
has ever "lacked" confidence. In 1988 he'd already been playing for many, many years, don't forget the guy started out with Zappa. You don't join Zappa's band if you lack / need / are searchig to find more confidence.

I said he was confident, and able, but looking at his music then and now he seems to have found himself. His early stuff was very Zappa-esque, now it's Vai-esque. That's what I meant to say. Darn martinis.

DLR's Skyscraper is a great album. I really like Vai's work on that album.
