Symphony X

I'm a late starter when it comes to Symphony X. I only started buying their albums a month ago but so far I've been realy impressed with Mike Romeo's playing. I think he's got a realy solid technique and he's also got some realy interesting chops.
I found this video this evening and I thought the more technical minded jemsiters might enjoy it.

Re: Symphony X

Michael is one of the best guitarists on this earth right now...I've been listening to them for many years, I have all the albums including the Dark Chapter (Mike's instrumental CD, a must have), signed fan club CD, sealed fan club CD, other autographed stuff, a million shirts, I'm also a early fan club member (#42). Seen them 2 times live, Gigantour and once was a very small club during the Odyssey tour, stood right in front of Mike and couldn't hear for a week thanks to Mike's killer Line6 Vetta HD, that kicked ass..

Re: Symphony X

Romeo is amazing. Sea of Lies is one of the best metal songs ever written. The solo got me hooked and i wasn't into metal when i first heard it

Re: Symphony X

Symphony X is a great band and Mike's a great guy if you ever get to meet him. I actually went and got all thier albums as well as the long out of print tab book, Mike's Solo album and instructional video (The guitar Chapter, which is where that video clip is from).

Re: Symphony X

I'm glad there's some love for Symphony X as I'm enjoying them more every time I listen to them.
The tittle track "The Odyssey" is fantastic !! It stops the long motorway journeys from being so damn boring. Although it's like 25mins long it's like a good film with twists and turns all the way through.

The Odyssey is one of my favorite songs and albums. I only started listening to them about a year ago, the catchy tunes they turn out out are magnificent and got me hooked! Michael is a really established guitar player, nothing and no one sounds quite like him. He's an inspiration to my playing style.

Re: Symphony X

I've always said that if Jason Becker would have made a second instrumental album, it would sound like Mike's solo album..Its a very raw album, much like Perpetual Burn, it was mastered and all, but you can tell that it was recorded in his home studio with a drum machine (but the programming was impeccable) and he did all the instruments eccept the keys on 1 track. And yet the recording is 20x better than anything Mike Varney ever produced,

The guitar tone is killer, I think its much better than Jasons, mostly done on a Marshall JCM800 and a fender M-80 and a Mesa preamp (not the Triaxis).

Its a must have CD for any shred head.

Re: Symphony X

ACtually up until recently Mike was using the Triaxis, now he tours witha Line 6 Vetta head, which suprises me. But if you see them live you look at their gear and wonder, because they don't have a huge refrigerator rack of gear, it looks like they came right from their bedrooms with their stuff and set it up on stage.
1st time I saw them, Mike Pinella was using his keyboard case as a stand and Mike R. was using his Triaxis with another rack processor and little else, and some second hand looking speakers for side fills. The prowess astounds me even more as you realize how much of their sound is just raw talent instead of effects and studio trickery. BTW, for those interested, I have a full version of the Guitar Chapter.

Re: Symphony X

Mike only used the Triaxis from Divine Wings and up, not the solo CD and the first 2 SymX albums. He also used a ENGL Fireball and a Mesa Dual Rec for the rhythm tracks to Odyssey. The other rack gear was more than likely a Rockman Comp/Sustain unit. He also would bring along a POD pro rack unit as well as backup to the Vetta.

Wow, calling him fat huh? I figured someone would be dumb enough to say something like that. Just to let you know he's lost a LOT of weight, which was very apparent at Gigantour.
