Technique vid

Well I've decided to tackle my technique head on, so I bought Petrucci's rock discipline DVD and I've been studying it fairly thouroughly. I am still having trouble developing my speed so I made this video to see what i was doing wrong. I think I am lifting my fingers up too much off the strings and it is slowing me down, but I'd like to know what you guys think. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Technique vid

What you have to do, is doing what your doing, but slower.
When you play slow, you can appreciate every detail of your technique, every single motion can be observed. Concentrate on not lifting your fingers too much, or in whatever is bothering you about your technique!
Good Luck!

Get a metronome and play it slow and in time. Then as you increase the speed of the metronome, your speed will improve and so will your tone.

Re: Technique vid

Practice, practice & practice. I know it's a boring answer, but it still works.

It looks like your left hand isn't acustomed to the fingering. Try to relax with your left hand. When you play at superspeed, it will go real easy. If not, you need practice more. Your left hand is soooo important in making the type of sound you can make.

About your right hand: Try to put your right hand in position. You are holding your hand way too high above the strings. You can let the palm of your hand rest om your whammy bar.

Good luck and have loads of fun practicing!

Re: Technique vid

Hey,

Yeah just slow it down a bit and practice to the metronome. Also, maybe 'tighten up' your left hand. I mean try and use less motion and rest your hand on the trem.

Personally, I like your left hand. Looks very fluid. I don't like the right hand. It looks like your almost strumming and I can hear some of the other strings ringing because they're not being damped.

First, switch to a clean channel. It looks like you can play at the speed you're playing at now just fine. It's just a few things that I'd say you need to work on before going faster. So, switch to clean.

Next, concentrate on damping out the other strings while you're playing. You can do this be gently resting your right hand on the pivot point of the bridge as if you were going to do palm muting. That's where I rest mine at. The next thing is to not take such large swings at the strings. That's alot of wasted energy which is causing some of the other strings to rings out.

By going clean you'll be able to get the speed your at better without any mistakes, efficiency in picking and only sounding the notes that you're picking as opposed to some of them ringing freely.

Do this and your personal sound will be better. Looks like you're pretty decent in the speed department, so incorporating these things successfully shouldn't take longer than about a week if you're practicing alittle bit each day.

I'm having to do the same thing actually. I'm trying to play this lightning fast Vai run at 252 bpm. I'm not super fast by any means, but I'm ok. Doing this run with clean sounds like crap in comparison to Vai playing it, but I'm get the sequence down pretty well and it sounds pretty good. However, I'm only at 240 bpm. Still go another 12 bpm to go.
