Just recently purchased one of these little gems and was blown away with what it did to the sound of my old Marshall. Sounded like a quilt was lifted from the speakers. It was that much of a night and day difference.
I never actually had the opportunity of testing this thing out before ordering it. I also couldn't find any sound clips of what it would do. So I thought I'd record something, just incase anyone wanted to hear.
The whole band noticed when I first plugged it in, the main thing though is *I* noticed. I noticed straight away. I was smiling literally the whole time afterwards. I couldn't believe that something this cheap could make my amp sound $1000 more expensive.
Anyway, enough words. Here's a little thing I recorded just to show some A/B comparisons with the
BBE sonic maximiser on, and off. Please excuse the messing playing. I have a headache, and my amp is LOUD. I remember why I bought the POD now.
BBE Sonic Maximiser Comparo
size = 785Kb
The MP3 starts with the BBE on. At 0:15 I turn it off and play the same riff. Hear the difference?
Firstly you can hear that it sounds muffled (all I did was turn the BBE off). Now you might think that this can be fixed by just mucking with the amp's EQ. No way. I've tried it. I've spent hours trying to get rid of the flub and add definition. Doesn't work with this amp unless you drop the gain (and lose the growl).
Secondly, with the BBE turned on you can tell the G, B, and E strings are pretty much the same volume as the E,A,D strings. They are also somewhat more "in sync". With the BBE off, i hear "flub".
At 0:25 I turn it back on, hit an E... Then turn it back off again and play a different riff. Muffled much?
I turn it back on at 0:37, and play the riff again.
Amp: Marshall JCM2000 DSL 100w head.
Cab: Marshall 2x12 (open back w/ celestion G12 speakers)
Guitar: Ibanez RG421 w/
Dimarzio Evolution PUPS.
FX: BBE sonic maximiser 362NR in the FX loop (NOTHING ELSE)
Mic: Shure SM-57
The guitar was plugged straight into the amp, bridge EVO selected. I was running the ultra gain channel on lead 2, with the gain set at 5, volume at 2. BBE dials set to 6 o'clock, and 6 o'clock.
It's really hard to convey what it actually sounds like when you're actually in the room. There really is a night and day difference. You can almost hear it in the recording, but again, I'm using a computer, with a mic that colour's the sound somewhat. Also, please excuse the messy playing, I really do have a headache.
