Van Halen + DLR Beer Drinkers Live 1983

Okay, here's an absolute gem from the vaults which a few of you may not have seen.

The song is ZZ Top's "Beer Drinkers, Hell Raisers". The band covering it is Van Halen. The lead singer is David Lee Roth. The location is Sao Paulo. The year is 1983. The attitude is on another freaking planet in another freaking universe!

Eddie's solo dances towards psychedelic blues insanity and it is rather good.

Maybe it's because I wasn't born until 1984...but I still don't fully "get" Van Halen My favorite VH song is "Right Now" if that tells you anything. And that's only cuz I love piano, and it was the first time I'd heard pinch harmonics Though I loved Eddie's solo on "Beat It" long before I'd ever heard the name Van Halen. I was so young I couldn't figure out how they made that sound, cuz I didn't know it was a guitar

Interesting vid though.

What is there to get? Just look at the video. One of the most energetic exciting performances you will ever see.

Look at Eddie! He defined a whole new style of playing that players like Steve Vai and Satriani both were influenced by.

Nope. I've already seen more energetic and exciting performances, from relatively new bands that most people here don't like. All gave great, exciting, energetic performances, and didn't miss a beat or a note:

Simple Plan
Billy Talent
I Mother Earth
Alexisonfire
Blue.Skies.At.War
Nickelback (great stage setup and pyros especially)
Three Days Grace (before they got their Ibanez and PRS guitars, playing pawn shop guitars, so a couple out of tune moments)

and this friday: Finger Eleven (I've seen their live DVD and a few other live shows of theirs through webcasts and they're always energetic, exciting, and hitting every note)

That part I definitely get, but I don't get why the original band with Roth was considered the best, etc.

Wow, cool, man. Thanks for the link. I have an mp3 of BDHRs that I d/l'd awhile back, but I'm not sure if it's the audio for this or a different recording.

I think that VH basically started out as a cover band. I like their covers because they do them in their own style.
