Re: awesome show at Hob LA

i dont mean to derail the topic but how good IS steve lukather?

I've seen him play a bit with marty friedman and thought "hmmm"

I guess i havent heard any of his own material to make a judgment. and no i'm not familier with toto.

Re: awesome show at Hob LA

Steve Lukather can definately hold his own on the stage with these guys. Granted, he isn't an insanely fast shredder, but he can unleash some fast technical licks when they are appropriate. He seems to be more of a groove player; instead of picking an insane amount of notes to play, he selects the right notes to play. I have a couple of his cd's and he definately composes really good music.

I've seen dweezil, sheehan, satriani, and vai a couple times but this is my first show where gilbert will be playing. can't wait

Re: awesome show at Hob LA

well, the concert kicked some serious ass. Vai opened and played a bunch of his classic hits and also tossed in building a church. Then he invited Dweezil out and Johnny Hiland. Paul Gilbert came out and played with satch and so did lukather and scott henderson.

Here's the review. All in all it was a fun show, tons of energy, fun songs and great musicians. The only little annoying thing that i found was their tones. All of them had the worst tone i could possibly imagine. I was hoping that there was something wrong with HOB LA's PA or something. I've heard vai, dweezil, satch before and the sounded awesome then, but this time the sound quality was horrible.

Also lukather did seem a little out of place, i don't think this is quite his style of music. Paul Gilbert brought out a arch top semi-hollow to jam with vai and satch which was an odd choice, but he had the least feedback from all the other guitarists....also henderson was.......not very entertaining. Basisists were Billy Sheehan for vai and Dave LaRue (probably my favorite bassist) for satch

All in all though vai and satch put on a great show. they also had an auction to raise some money. some family from italy paid 26K!!!! for the vai jem DNA guitar on e*ay and the came down to pick it up. I was really surprised to see most of the guitars sell easily for the 5k range. Oh they also gave a free lesson from vai himself to however bought the other 2006 mirored signed jem, and the offered a lesson with satch to whoever bought the js1000 chromeboy.

All in all it was fun. music from 9-1:30!!!

Re: awesome show at Hob LA

I just returned home to Boston from LA. This show was absolutely amazing. They played for nearly 5 hours, and I was lucky enough to witness it from the front row. I was able to see the guys before the show, and I was also on the aftershow list. Here are some pics from that day.
Enjoy
Christin
