Paul Gilbert in Chicago

Anyone else see this in this month's Entertainer?
Paul Gilbert, Mike Portnoy, Billy Sheehan, and Gary Cherone doing a Who tribute band at Durty Nellies, which I think only holds a few hundred people.

I want to see Gilbert bad, but I just can't get excited about this.

Weren't Gilbert and Portnoy half of a Zeppelin tribute band recently? I think these guys just love to play the stuff they grew up listening to

Re: Paul Gilbert in Chicago

I missed him in Chicago with Portnoy and ??? doing "Cygnus and the Sea Dogs" (I think that's right), a Rush tirbute at the Vic for some drum store's anniversery party last September. Too bad for me that my brother's twins were getting baptized that day, so while a melding of one of my favorite guitarists and one of my favorite bands would have been sweet, I would have been disowned by my family if I'd gone, and, well, maybe that would ahve been worth it...

I'm not a big Who fan, but I'll try to go to this. Elcid - do you have any info on it?

Re: Paul Gilbert in Chicago

Saw this show last night, it was amazing indeed! They played all of Tommy, and a lot of early stuff as well. They played the kinds of songs The Who never play. Gary Cherone was fantastic, and pulled off all of Daltrey's high notes. He really was a great choice for this, and was dressed like Daltry in the Army shirt and short died blonde hair as well. Gilbert dressed up like Townshend, in a white jump suit with a bit of a goatee, and played Ibanez Les Pauls and SGs all night. Sheehan was great (surprise) and Portnoy was outstanding. He played the whole night without a high hat, bringing one out for "Who Are You" in the second encore. When they finished the show, with "My Generation", Gilbert smashed his guitar (a cheapo red SG brought out for just the last song), Sheehan smashed his equally cheap bass, and Portnoy smashed all his drums. It was fantastic A really, really great night out. And, as always happens when I go to B.B. Kings it seems, I got to say hi to Rob Balducci, who was also in the crowd.
