A Guitar Supreme - Giant Steps in Jazz Fusion

Anyone have this album. i hadn't listened in a while and was completely blown away again when i brought it out of retirement. i'd have to say that, for me, greg howe doing "giant steps" is the single greatest fusion recording. i must have listened to that song more than i've played my guitar for the past 2 days (ok, not really).
so, if you have this, whats your favorite track?

Re: A Guitar Supreme - Giant Steps in Jazz Fusion

I am not that keen on fusion covers of Coltrane's tunes really.

I like Eric Johnson a lot, but for him to cover Resolution from a Love Supreme I just find sacreligious. I don't like Gambale that much either. I am sure Greg Howe (who I like) did a good job on Giant Steps, but I have to say that I am tired of all the covers of the tune - in most case it's just a showcase of how fast people can play over the changes. I liked the Metheny take (on the live trio album), because he approached the composition from a different angle.

Just my opinions though, I haven't heard the album in a while...

To add to that, I'd prefer to hear an album like that with younger jazz players like Kurt Rosenwinkel, Tim Miller, Johnatan Kreisberg, Ben Monder etc...

Hey, don't take it wrong, the playing is very good, but for me a Coltrane tribute needs a bit more than just some people meeting in a studio (if they ever even met) to do it justice. Coltrane holds a special place in my book, so maybe that's why I couldn't warm up to the idea.

It's kind of like those Mike Varney Project albums with Gambale and Holdsworth and with Gambale, Lane, Garsed. The playing is freaking scary, but having a bunch of players that aren't even in the same room playing so-called improvised music doesn't work at the end of the day...

Yes, compared to the generic Shrapnel shredders they are, because each of these players has something interesting going besides the insane chops...
