American Idol winner David Cook mentions Vai, Satriani, Yngwie in interview

Despite being on American Idol (which I despise), I really do think David Cook is a genuine artist who actually plays. I think he's got a good voice and could be great if in the right setting.

Anyways, in a recent interview with Guitar Player, he said this:

"But once I got in the mind frame of using the guitar to accentuate what I was trying to do with the song, everything started to take off for me. Anybody can shred if they practice at it, but even with guys like Vai, Satriani, and Yngwie, there’s something extra in their music that transcends mere guitar playing."

No doubt there are talented musicians on American idol and any other idol for that matter, the only problem is now they are owned by the record labels associated with the Idol franchise.

Dont think for one minute that this winner has a record deal where he can write and sing about any topic he wants.

He is locked into songs, I will bet that has already been pre written only giving him a few extra areas of which he can add to...

Idol is a well oiled machine, and although I understand why a true musician might enter it, $$$$ and fame, I feel it will still taint this musician and will follow him for the rest of his life....

Yeah, that's why I think he could be really good if in the right setting (ie - away from the Idol record labels).
