Andy Timmons - Live resolution(DVD)

Anybody seen this yet?

I got it in the post recently (very fast service through the AT website!)- its a DVD recording of a live show in Texas.

Picture quality isn't great (pixellated at times) and its a pretty badly encoded DVD (the widescreen borders are encoded as part of the image, its only 640 width, and off centre too ), but sound quality is great, which I guess is the most important thing..

Im a big fan of Andy, and its a great concert from a great album, so I can overlook the the quality issues. Anybody else picked up a copy?

I've watched it a few times, great performance. But one thing is that I haven't been liking Andy's new tone at all.

Wow are you serious? pixelated....badly encoded, off center...you've effectively completely turned me off of buying this. I love Andy but paying 30 dollars (incl. shipping) for a DVD with those kinda issues...no way. Thanks for the heads up cuz I was actually going to pick it up.

Re: Andy Timmons - Live resolution(DVD)

I got it and I really like it. I really didn't think about the quality issues because it's pretty well done, for the budget he's working with. It's way better than his bootleg DVD as far as quality.

I think his tone is better than ever, although it may not come through completely on this DVD. I've had the chance to watch him play old and new songs live in the summer of '07 and his tone was crazy good. None of us could get the tone out of the Stiletto and Lonestar that he did. But he walked in and dialed it in with no problem. He's one of my main recommendations to see live if you love amazing tone and incredibly musical playing.

Whoah.. I certainly don't mean to put you off dude, i was disappointed with the quality, but at the same time, I didn't expect big production values from an artist like Andy and a small label. I was just trying to give an honest assessment, not put people off buying the disc...

Its not bad per se, just not pro-quality. Its still a cool DVD, and Andy's an awesome artist. Im pretty sure it was his handwriting on the package, so I guess he's sending these things out by himself. That's pretty cool, and I like to support guys like that.

Nah, don't mind my complaining, maybe im overly-fussy. If you were thinking of picking up a copy, do

Well see thats the thing... I know Andy's not a big artist, but he is an artist on a relatively big label (Vai's Favored Nations) and charging 25 dollars + ship for a DVD that isnt pro quality is shameful in my opinion (this is NOT a shot at Andy, as I'm pretty sure he doesnt decide what the selling price for stuff like that is). Pro shot dvds from similar artists sell for 13-15 on Amazon and elsewhere, I dont see why they cant price these the same...especially if it cant even be considered pro shot by most dvd-lovers.

Its not that it's badly shot (camerawork etc), it just seems like it's been compressed to below DVD quality at some stage in the production line. Like if you put a Divx on a DVD... some blocking/pixellation in dark areas, and some interlacing/moire effects. Its not that bad, just slightly noticeable.

I mean I understand that its still watchable, but for instance Id be watching it on a large HD tv (46 inches), and stuff like that will look awful on it when blown up if its been compressed. The last thing i wanna see when I'm trying to follow andy's fingers is a pixelation blotch, ya know?

i was at that show

and i totally agree, at least with the tone on the actual resolution cd. my favorite recorded tone of his is probably from the cd that preceded resolution where he recorded 4 new tunes + a best of previous material. the tone on those new tunes was amazing. now if i remember correctly, all of his studio recordings to date have been with marshalls. i don't think he got the mesa endorsement until after the cd was released. so i think the culprit with his current studio sound has to be how it was recorded. it's just too bassy imo and not as organic as his tone has been in the past.

live, i really did not like the sound of those mesa's when he first started using them, which was right about when resolution was released (and when this dvd was recorded). but after gigging with those amps for a couple of years and returning to dallas it seems as though he has figured out how to really dial in a sweet tone with the stilletto/lonestar combo. granted, andy would sound great through a solid state 5 watt practice amp, but his tone has definitely gone through a metamorphosis as of late.

i bought the dvd at his last show a month ago, but only paid $20? maybe it was a promotional price. i still haven't watched it yet because i have a pretty big backlog of dvds to watch. plus, i've seen that show anyway, lol.

I have not been crazy about his tone either. He has said he is using Eric Johnson as a tone template. NOT GOOD, unless you are using him for the basis of your clean sound. Johnson's distortion has ZERO bite to it. If you listen to Ear X-Tacy 2, that is what I consider to be his tone peak. Now it is too round and soft on distortion. I hardly ever listen to Resolution because of it.

You didn't by chance come out and see him last time I hosted him here in Raleigh, did you? If not, you've got to! His live tone is ridiculous, although I realize tones are very subjective. He's using the BB for a boost and it sounds great in conjunction with what he has dialed in on the Mesa. We're talking about it again so it may not be long at all before he's able to come back. To me, his playing and musicality are what I look forward to but I always leave his shows amazed at how he got such great live tones. A lot in that guy's hands.

Re: Andy Timmons - Live resolution(DVD)

No, I haven't seen him live. I know he is a monster player and I would never question his musical ability. He and Dave Murray ( for sentimental reasons since he was my first influence) are probably my top two guitarists. I just wasn't a fan of his tone of Resolution. If I get the chance, I will definitely go to see him when he is there. Hopefully I won't have another commitment and gas won't be $12 a gallon.

I know that there are tons of people who sound one way recorded and another live. I also know that he was using Marshalls and not the Mesas for Resolution, so his tone may be totally different. However, I did notice the rounding off of his tone and when he mentioned Eric Johnson it made sense. I love Eric's clean tone, but his distorted tones sound like a trumpet with a blanket over it. Tone is subjective, as you said. I just like more crunchy distortion along the lines of Paul Gilbert. Andy was sporting that during Ear X-Tacy 2. The beginning of Sometimes I just crushes.
