Any Dream Theater fans?
I know there must be a few of yous about. I just want to know which of their
albums
are seen as being the best, as I have a chance to buy a couple. I know some bands have a lull and put out albums to avoid, is this the case with
Dream Theater
?

Re: Any Dream Theater fans?
There are a lot of Dream theater fans on here.
I like all their albums. That being said I think, Images and Words, Awake, and Scenes From A Memory are my favorite.

Re: Any Dream Theater fans?
They have many good albums so it's not easy recommending 2 of their best, but "Images and Words" is my favorite because I can listen to it over and over. I own everything DT and LTE but if I were to keep just two, it would be "Images and words" and Liquid Tension Experiment 1

Re: Any Dream Theater fans?
the thing with dt is that they have NO bad albums, just get any album, you won't regret it
however, if you do need a "The Best Of", Score (CD or DVD) would be a great choice. good selection of songs from their entire career, and a previously unreleased song, and stellar production.

Go with When Dream and Day Unite, Images and Words, and Awake. Awake being my all time favorite. Kevin Moore wrote some great music.

Re: Any Dream Theater fans?
I agree with everybody, all cds are awesome.
I saw so many people saying hey I hate DT cause they're so complex, they're so exagerated or something.
Well this shows me how that people know nothing about DT cause they have not only 20 minutes songs but awesome 4 minutes pop songs like Anna Lee as an example.
And the amazing thing about them to me is every cd has an unique sound. They all have DT personality but they sound different.
And about lyrics...................Amazing.
Score and live at budokan dvds are masterpieces.

Re: Any Dream Theater fans?
huge DT head, i absolutley adore metropolis pt2 (scenes from a memory), train of thought and octavarium are my faves. However if its a best of you are looking for try Deam Theater's gratest hit (...and 21 other pretty cool songs). If i'm honest, there is no such thing as a crap dream theater album! Says the guy who saw them last week and has just booked for prog nation!

Re: Any Dream Theater fans?
If I could only have two albums, I'd get
(1)
Score XX (triple live CD) and
(2)
Images & Words.
After that...
(3) Awake
(4) Six Degrees
(5) Octavarium
Those five would be my must-haves if I were stranded on a desert island. You definitely can't go wrong with any of the live albums,
Score
being my favorite.
Low on my list?
Falling Into Infinity
,
Systematic Chaos
, and
Train of Thought
, although ToT is growing on me these days. I've listened to DT since
I&W
was a
new
album coming up on 20 years ago... you really can't go wrong with any DT disc, even my lesser favorites. I've already heard the new one that's coming out next week, and it's above-average for them.

I'm really not a big fan of Dream Theater in their current state. Don't get me wrong, I still love the band, but because they are so great, I hold them to high expectations.
Anyways, I'm just not big on the current sound they're after. I don't really think Rudess fits as well with the band as Kevin Moore. Sure, he might be more technically proficient, but I think Moore was more tasteful. He added more of that classic progressive element too (Genesis, Yes, Rush, etc...). A lot of what Rudess does in DT sounds like a computer program to me. Then again though, I'm a big fan of him with Liquid Tension. I also preferred Petruccis old tone and style of playing. It seemed less "perfect" and less sterile. For example, I love the way he plays this solo. Not to sound like cliched blues/tone purist, but it seems to have "more soul."

I love that solo too, I used to steal that note for note in the mid 90s whenever I got an instrumental number

Re: Any Dream Theater fans?
I think Rudess was absolutely perfect on the Scenes from a Memory album. Other than that though, I agree.
I actually really liked Derek Sherinian's contribution to the band, and thought he came up with more interesting stuff than Rudess, even if Rudess is the better player.
To add though, up until Six Degrees of Inner turbulence, none of the music sounded forced. It was all really natural and flowing (does that even make sense?). But I don't get the same vibe from most of the new stuff. Actually to me, there was a big divide between Six degrees disc 1 and 2. Disc 1 was great, and pretty original sounding, while with disc 2, they tried to too hard, and I get the same feeling from Octavarium and a lot of the other newer stuff.
