Re: Any one here bored of Shred guitar?

I never heard Petrucci until I bought the G3 Tokyo DVD and I must say I thought his songs were excellent. He certainly didn't come off as arrogant to me. I really liked the way he mixed up his technique. Great player. I don't even think I'd call Vai arrogant. More like over-the-top flamboyant. But hey, he's a guitar master and a showman. I wouldn't want it any other way.

Its pretty musically intense. A bit too much for some people, its the obvious one but acid rain rain unbelievable and one of the best recordings of all time imo.

To me it sounds like DT without vocals. I like Johns solo effort much more.

Re: Any one here bored of Shred guitar?

i enjoy petrucci and vai both, but in moderation. cant really say one is better than the other. same with the satch vs vai arguments. there are so many great players that you really cant rank them, plus its not worth getting stuck on just one musician when the are so many others to listen to

Back when it was released, DT was doing nothing in that vein...

Of course, fast forward a couple years and with Jordan joining DT yeah, you have 3/4ths LTE inside DT... I just wish theyd play more LTE material live

Maybe some of you recognize it: I get tired at times of hearing myself shred. Usually I get into some unexplored scales when I get this feeling.

Any of you recognize?

I get tired of hearing myself play the same type of shred constantly. Like I don't always want to hear myself play fast alt picked mutola licks , and I don't always want to hear myself play wide interval legato stuff. I will, quite often get sick of genres I'm spending too much time on, whether it be rock, jazz, or whatever. Either way, there are always elements of shred in my own playing. I don't particularly find myself wishing I was sloppier.

"Bored" would be putting it mildly, and I have never really listened to it in the first place

Re: Any one here bored of Shred guitar?

i love shred but i don't like rusty... he just really bores me. i seen a vid of him live once and it was a 7 minute solo (not like a malmsteen song/solo) in the middle of a song. plus there the 8 string shred which is great, up until about the 9 minute of it.

I have days that even any kind of minor sweep arpeggios make me puke. On those occasions, I either come up with a new schedule to play (for example only major stuff) or I get into a state of non-Creation that can last up to a year. Lately my Yngwie playing made me puke again. So, I decided to do something with it. I have a very good MIDI file for some Yngwie tunes and started to fiddle around with them. I'm now learning Icarus Dreamsuite note by note.

It's been inspiring, to tell the truth. And it's all minor/Harmonic minor scales. Very easy to pick up and play. The truth is that the acoustic parts of the song caused me more trouble then the actual solo's! What a great piece by the way. It remembers one why Yngwie is "simply and undeniable" amongst the worlds top players and playing styles. It's simply unbelievable for the era when the first Yngwie albums came out. He then certainly was the only one displaying this level of Might in playing and neo-classical shredding in '85/86.

I wondered if I'd put a Trilogy Suite video on youtube. I Know the whole song note for note since '95 and have the full MIDI acompagniement. Instead I decided to persevere in finding a keyboardist that could play this tune with me on a live stage, instead of ****ing off with stuff that I already dig. A live video of such a performance is much more interesting instead of just being, ultimately, another Yngwie ripp-off on YouTube.com. Who'd care anyway?

Anyways...

Peace & Rock On,

D.

Re: Any one here bored of Shred guitar?

Satch has never once bored me, and I find that if I take a break from Vai and all them, then come back a few months later, its refreshed. But lately Ive found myself going back to my roots, which are jazz/blues and classical, raw.
My two biggest influences are SRV and Jeff Beck, and Andy Timmons and Eric Johnson and Shawn Lane have really captured me...again. I was into them intensly a couple of months ago. Name any jazz great, and Im into them too right now. Charlie Hunter has really really influenced me lately, just cuz of the dual instrumentation that hes doing.
Ive also been transposing the Bach Inventions (13 and 11 right now) from piano to guitar. Its pretty damn hard to put the right hand part where it needs to be, while still keeping the left hand motifs in there too. I love it though!
I still love my shred at times though. Healthy doses to humble you, I guess.
