Although I admire and appreciate Rusty a lot, I must agree that I have found only a few movements of his music non-boring. His shred is AWESOME, but somehow it remains just that, shred. I dunno if it's feeling what I miss, or melodic empathy. I really don't know. Like I said, his shred is awesome, but in the end seems a little "robotic", with all regards to the Mighty Rusty. His technique, in any case, is perfect indisputably.

To give an example of my perception of his playing, is that I would have arranged "Under the influence" completely differently, and would never had included the sweeping 3rd part as part of the tune, since it is simply "too alien" for non-shred Initiates. if it were more "melodic", maybe it would be another thing. Maybe this depicts my notion/wish that (my) music should be accessible to almost anybody when created and performed. This piece, with much potential for melodic enterprises, remains a "freakshred" piece to my own taste. "100's of 1000's" by MacAlpine is the kind of adrenaline boost that that particular song should do on my spine and does in the beginning. The song further on doesn't get involved melodically enough however to make that idea stick. That's, sort of, how Rusty Cooleys incredible guitarplaying is perceived by me.

He is, let me repeat, absolutely incredible as a player though. Hail Rusty!! But his choice of notes usually doesn't seem to be of my choice.

Enough...

Rock on!

Re: Any one here bored of Shred guitar?

I go through all kinds of phases! I get into Pop & Rap, heavily at times. Malmsteen, I can never listen too anymore. A lot of guys just shread and they have no feeling at all. I'm not much of a Satch fan, some stuff. I think Vai is so diverse, I like his tone, phrasing, song compostion, other musicians in the songs, producing, & basically his overall song writing. I still think rock music right now is at a lull right now, I like some of it. But, I think when metal died in '91 '92, it was a big breath of fresh air. Every song had the same componenets, verses/bridge/chorus, and again, guitar solo repeat verse\chorus/end. To have musicians focus on the song instead of their outfits, hair, & guitar solo was nice.

Re: Any one here bored of Shred guitar?

I like almost all of the players listed thus far, though i am reluctant to group them all under the banner of shred. For me shredders are people like Cooley, Gilbert, MAB, McAlpine, Malmsteen, Becker etc etc. Then there are people who can shred but do so less often; Petrucci, Vai, Shawn Lane, Ron Thal, Govan, etc, etc. For me the absolute fastest player there is Shawn Lane (people will disagree, but i reckon he is faster than cooley and the like) but i would hesitate to call him a shredder, and he was absolutely one of the most gifted musicians/players there as well. The best player is Ron Thal!
Players in the first list get minimal listen time from me nowadays, but i do like to crank them up on occassion. People in the second list are regualrly listened to.
gotta say though that i believe only 2 of the players i listen to regularly employ speed (shred) and really apply it effectively and musically nearly all the time; Ron Thal and John Petrucci. Thal is my absolute fave guitarist whilst Petrucci really isn't, but i do think he is one of the most tasteful lead guitarists in any genre and always employs speed to great musical effect. Just gets a bit boring at times. Other players have a tendency to be way too indulgent, particularly Vai though he remains a huge favourite (and inspiration) of mine.

Andy Timmons is such a badass. He knows when to shred but never goes overboard IMO. I feel very similar about satch

Re: Any one here bored of Shred guitar?

i get annoyed when alot of people say kurt cobain killed the guitar solo. i would disagree, why he may have had a basic simple understanding of guitar techniques, he used them to promote his own style. i feel no compassion for people like michaelange batio. He and others like him for me killed the guitar solo.

I like Petrucci's music more so than Vai's, but I would never say He was on a different level than Vais. And if he was, it would be a lower level.

Satch never bores me because he is more of a musiciam than a shredder. Even most of his shred lines have vocal world like qualities to them.

Vai is just too .. I wanna say weird, but I like weird. Maybe abstract is the term I am looking for.

I like some Yngwie in small doses because he tends to use the same tricks in each song.

But I also love GOOD pop music. Like The Cardigans, or some 80s techno music.

I know I'm gonna get absolutley slaughtered for this but the whole grunge thing was a big 2 fingers up to the shredders and overplayers of the '80s...rock guitar had become too much about the solos/speed picking/tapping/sweeping/double-handed tapping/hairspray/guitar aerobics etc etc

Cobain just let rip into his instrument, I totally get it.

Now most guitar music in the charts is so simplistic and boring that I think we're gonna see more technique creeping in...and I welcome it with open arms!
