Re: Best Guitar Instructional DVD
You can't beat PG's Intense Rock for a combination of techniques/licks and entertainment. The thing I like about Gilbert is he's giving licks that you can actually put into your own playing and has a great way of explaining the ideas. I've owned a lot of these videos and most of them just run through the licks and are boring to boot. Here's a quick rundown of some that I own, or have owned:
V. Moore - his first video (can't remember the name). Good licks but he is a prime example of BORING.
G. Lynch - REH video. It's got some cool licks, then he goes into excerpts from songs, and ends with studio footage of him jamming over Lynch Mob tracks. The licks are pretty good, the excerpts are probably pointless now because you probably know them already if you're a Lynch fan, and the studio jams are cool to watch but not instructional. And he's a boring teacher. Overall, probably useful if I bought it in 1990 (although it would have been $50!) but not so much now. It's been released on DVD, if you're a Lynch fan and find it for $20, get it.
Impellitteri - REH video. Boring, useless, sold it.
Kotzen - REH video mentioned above (Rock Chops). It has some good stuff in it, I would get it if you can find it. Haven't watched it in a long time, can't comment on watchability.
Yngwie - REH. If you're an Yngwie fan, and find it for dirt cheap, get it. Otherwise, stay away! Horrible instructor, the licks "slowed down" are still pretty quick, and he just runs through them.
Gambale - Monster Licks. If you already understand the concept of speed/sweep picking, don't bother.
Gambale - Modes. A lot of people really like this one but I still didn't get a good grasp of when to use what mode after watching it. And it doesn't have any licks/techniques if that's what you're looking for. If you want to learn modes and find it cheap, get it.
