Best Guitar Instructional DVD

I'm looking for something showing a lot of scale patterns, picking techniques, tapped arpeggios, sweep picking, higher end shred techniques. More advanced stuff to work with. I was thinking maybe Speed Kills 2-3. MAB bores the absolute **** out of me, but if it helps it helps right? Any suggestions?

Re: Best Guitar Instructional DVD

Any of Andy James DVD's feature all of the techniques you mentioned and he does them in a very melodic tasteful way. You can get them through lick library I believe.

I really like Vinnie Moore's videos, but I don't think they're on DVD yet.

Any of PG's videos.
Also, Frank Gambale's "monster techniques" (I think that's what it's called)...that one has a lot of great technique in it. Be careful with Gambale's technique, though...if you're not careful, it'll screw up your regular picking if you start doing his weird method too much.

Paul Gilbert will be releasing the SFBADR instructional DVD this month, and Paul's DVDs are always great.

I know what you mean. I used to be great at alternate picking, then I got into satriani and went more to legato, now I can't alt pick for crap. PG seems to me the most "exciting" to learn from. Alot of guitarists' personalities get in the way of their teaching I think. PG seems to convey a more down to earth feel to me. MAB is about as technically good as you can possibly be, which is why I most likely still will pick up speed kills 3, but I'd honestly rather watch honey roll down a grizzly's nut sack than listen to the guy.

True, dat...

If the SFBADR vid is even half as good as the GOOMY vid, it'll still be well-worth the money and time.

Man, I couldn't agree with you more. I picked up a magazine put out by GW (can't remember the name of the publication), and it included a 90-minute "best of" instructional DVD by MAB (comprised entirely of little snippets from previously-released video lessons). I won't say it's "boring", but let's just say that I now use that video to help me drift off to a peaceful, relaxed slumber, whilst visions of Ibby's float in my head. Aw, screw it...the guy is just bowel-looseningly boring as an instructor.
Stark contrast to PG or even Frank Gambale (and even watching him is akin to watching paint dry, though I love his technique). Both of those guys put out amazing videos.

And then there's Rock Discipline from JP. Again, very technically proficient, and he seems like a helluva nice guy and all, but that video makes me feel all sleepy. The coma-inducing effects of that particular video have been well-documented, though, so I guess I'm beating the proverbial dead horse.

Paul posted up that he is including for the first time, backing tracks and full tablature.

Re: Best Guitar Instructional DVD

Well, I bought Paul Gilbert's Intense Rock I and II, and I'm very pleased with the instruction. Kind of hard to get past the hair and dead slang like "hip", but all in all a very good buy. Speed Kills 3 will be here shortly. I might have to take up snorting coke again to stay awake during it though. Catch 22

The Richie Kotzen "Rock Chops" tape is awesome. It blew my mind when I first saw it. I think he was only 18 or so at the time...

Its a full shred fest.

Re: Best Guitar Instructional DVD

Ok, I got Speed Kills 3 in the mail today. I haven't watched every segment, but here is my overview.

1. Their ordering method is absolutely ridiculous. You call them, they track your call, then call you back. It sounded shady at first to me, but apparently it's on the up and up......even though it's still stupid as ****

2.The actual DVD is really nothing more than scale runs back and forth, up and down

3.Michael Angelo Batio has got some SERIOUS issues. Nevermind the fact that his hair looks like he went into a barber's and said "**** it, just get it out of my face", but several times during the instruction, he goes into this alternate personality where he sounds like a crazy nun in catholic school. It's really very scary to watch. The dvd is in no way, shape or form worth how much they make you pay for it, but it does teach exactly what it says it does.
