Pantera, bar none.

I know this sounds myopic, but I haven't heard any band that combines melody and groove or that sounds as heavy yet (and I've sampled most of the bands mentionned so far).

Honourable mentions to :
Brand New Sin (first two albums)
Killswitch Engage (10 songs or so)
Machine Head (10 songs or so)
Megadeth (not quite the same metal)

anything before the Glorious Burden will melt your face. Alive in Athens is perfect, you get a smattering of all there best work. and has been compared to albums like IM's Live after Death.

It is a weaker release because most of it was still written/conceived when Owens was in the band, so it lost its continuity.

I agree with a few here on Slayer as #1. I love every single thing they have done.
I like this post too for the simple fact that there have been a few mentioned that I haven't thought about in years. So thanks for the reminder to go back and listen to some of these greats!
