No offense but the vast majority of those bands are either hard rock or glam, etc. Not everything with a distorted guitar from the 80's was/is metal.

The only guys I'd consider 'metal' from that list would be Megadeth, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, and Motley Crue (just barely though).

Some of my personal favs are The Faceless, Five Finger Death Punch, Gojira, Dethklok, Powerglove, Trivium, as well as most of the bands mentioned here already.

it's not my kind of metal, or yours apparently, but you will have to accept that a lot of those band are indeed glam *metal* or hair *metal*, so they do qualify as metal, especially as the poster says he likes pop metal.

And older bands like Scorpions, Dokken, Witesnake, AC/DC have actually defined what is Heavy Metal, you may want to label them Hard Rock. But even if you don't care for them, it would still be silly to ignore them, or berate someone for calling them metal.

In much the same way that Pop can refer to Britney Spears, Bon Jovi or the Beatles...

Between the Buried and Me
Dream Theater
Lamb of God
Through The Eyes of the Dead
Opeth
Necrophagist
Mastodon
Protest the Hero
The Human Abstract
Meshuggah
The Chariot
Behold...The Arctopus

I've been kind of getting into Cephalic Carnage lately, but im still not entirely sold on some of it...oh and Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza...pretty heavy stuff...I have very mixed loves for metal, from the extreme to the blunt force; like The Chariot, but if you live here in the south and see The Chariot, its just one of those things.

I very much understand what you say, but the way I personally see it when it comes to classifying bands like Deadtunes did is kind of like saying Coldplay is rock. Some people might see it like that way but I just don't think that they fit that description (I'm pretty sure they even said they weren't really rock when they won the Rock Album Grammy).

That being said, classifying bands into genres is a pretty fudged topic. Some bands fall under around nearly 10 different genres in wikipedia (even if most of them are pretty much completely wrong), so it's more or less pointless to argue about this thing.

And finally someone who likes behold the arctopus, lol!

Re: best metal bands??

It just depends on what the individual thinks of as 'metal.' My list would be about the same as DeadTunes. I think of heavier bands like Five Finger Death Punch, Dethklok, Sepultura, Necrophagist, etc., more as "thrash" or "industrial" or "black" metal. You can't say, "Oh, those hair bands aren't metal!" because everyone perceives metal as something different. I listen to a lot of "hair metal" so to me, that IS metal. You listen to Deathklok, so to you, the definition of metal is something much heavier.

It's ALL metal, just different branches of the same family tree.
