Well there's a clip of the album version on Acidplanet.net in his contest site (if that's still up). It's really jazz/lounge sounding. Maybe he's been finding a middle ground between the two versions for live shows?

And "I'm Afraid of Americans" is probably one of my favorite Bowie songs, along with "Man Who Sold The World". Both amazing live too

Interestingly, the version of "I'm Afraid of Americans" that he's playing on this tour is based on Trent Reznor's remix.

To be completely honest, I don't think I've ever heard the non-Reznor version

Oh the original album version is great. The whole thing is based off a monster Reeves Gabrels riff tracked eight times, each through a different chain of fuzzboxes. But the biggest difference between the two is the F# to A part in the chorus of the Reznor version, instead of the fuzzbox mayhem.

Hmm...I may have to look around for a copy of the single (which I believe has the original and all the Reznor/NIN remixes)

err...after a quick dash to amazon.com, I think I'll have a look at my local library (has a surprising collection of CDs which includes Vai's Fire Garden and Flexable Leftovers and Satch's Crystal Planet and Strange Beautiful Music among many many others) and go downloading (since I'm only looking for the one song and can't afford a full CD at the moment

I've never been able to find the single, unfortunately. I'd never heard the Reznor version until I bought the Best of Bowie DVD 2 months ago.
