Brian May

or he may not.

Oh dear.

Anyway, I listened to Queen's "The Game" for the first time the other day, wow, Brian May can really play can't he? Always loved Queen's singles, had a ton of respect for his solid abilities and gentlemanly nature, never really thought of him as a flashy player. I think the album is not regarded as one of their best, but wow, some very cool licks and alien playing.

This to me is interesting. He can clearly play very well in the technical sense but his taste and restraint is so evident in many of the singles as to almost make him blend into the background, as it were.

So...any recommendations of CDs on which he shows off a bit?

btw, why does women with horses and doughnuts dot com not exist?

Re: Brian May

I love their 1986 record "It' a Kind of Magic" (Which was also the soundtrack for Highlander I think), there's some really great playing on there IMHO .

Regards

André

Re: Brian May

my favourite queen albums are 'queen' and 'queen II'. some brilliant playing on there, and brian was really pushing the technical boundaries at the time, both in terns of technique and technology, i think he deserves more credit than he gets!

Re: Brian May

Brian May has always been one of my favourite guitarist, the solo to "We will Rock" is what made me want to play guitar. I would say he really shows his skills on most earlier Queen albums, but the later ones have some great guitar on them too. I haven't heard his solo album though.

I seem to remember seeing him tapping in the bohemian rhapsody video just some tapped harmonics. Ed was the first guy to do it well though big difference between a note stab and the classical based tapping section of eruption

Re: Brian May

Everything before "the game" has some really nice riffs and solos... if you read the booklet in "the game", youll see it says "this is the 1st queen album with recorded synths", or something like that... before that, its more rockin guitar

Re: Brian May

He's got a couple solo albums out there... one of them is called "Back to the Light" and the other is "Another World"

He's a seriously talented guy. I have almost every Queen CD out there... definitely one of the best bands ever.

As for Eddie Van Halen... Brian played with him in something called "Star Fleet Project"

Re: Brian May

Brian May is freakin awesome, and is one of the main reasons I picked up a guitar. He is underrated. My only criticism is that he isn't the best improviser live (he's good, just not great), but he has to be one of the best and most creative guitarists in the studio.

Wasn't Star Fleet some short lived very cheesy TV show?

I think it has quite the cult following, videos of this show go on E b a y for obscene amounts, though I've never seen the show. So much mainstream media is kack, we should live and die for the weird stuff.

Re: Brian May

May tapped on the solo for "It's Late" on "News of the World" and I believe that was released a year or two before VH1.
